RAWALPINDI: Pakistan took advantage of some poor South African fielding to reach 177-3 at tea on the opening day of the second and final Test in Rawalpindi on Monday.

Despite their fielding lapses South Africa's spinners removed Abdullah Shafqiue (57) and Babar Azam (16) to check the momentum of the hosts, who won the toss on a spin-friendly pitch.

Shan Masood, dropped on 71 off a luckless Keshav Maharaj, was unbeaten on 77 with two fours and three sixes while Saud Shakeel was six not out at the break.

Babar Azam showed his mastery with the bat after Shaheen Shah Afridi led a sparkling bowling performance from Pakistan as the hosts cruised to a four-wicket victory over South Africa in the series-deciding third T20 International at the Gaddafi Stadium on Saturday.

Shaheen picked up 3-26, being the standout of Pakistan’s bowling attack, in which Faheem Ashraf and debutant Usman Tariq picked up two wickets each, as South Africa were restricted to 139-9 after being put into bat.

Babar then provided an anchor in the chase with a brilliant 68, featuring nine fours, as Pakistan eased to victory with six balls to spare.

International cricket is set to return to Faisalabad's Iqbal Stadium after 17 years with the three-match one-day international series between Pakistan and South Africa from Tuesday.

The central city in Punjab province last staged an international match in 2008 when Pakistan and Bangladesh played an ODI.

Pakistan endured a six-year exile from international cricket in the aftermath of a militant attack on the Sri Lankan team bus in Lahore in March 2009.

The national team were forced to play their international matches on neutral venues in the United Arab Emirates before the deadlock was broken gradually from 2015 onward.

But Faisalabad was left out as an international venue due to lack of facilities which have gradually improved in the last three years.
Pakistan's newly appointed ODI skipper Shaheen Shah Afridi hailed the decision to host matches in Faisalabad.

"It's a special occasion that Faisalabad is hosting an international match after 17 years," said Shaheen on Monday. "It will be good for the fans of the city."

The ODIs are the tail end of the tour by South Africa who drew a two-match Test series 1-1 and lost 2-1 in the Twenty20 internationals.

Shaheen admitted captaincy was a big responsibility for him.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced the squads for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka and the T20I tri-nation series featuring Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Zimbabwe.

Right-handed batter Hasan Nawaz has been released from the Pakistan men’s squad to participate in the ongoing Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, the country’s premier first-class tournament, with the seventh round starting on 11 November.

Left-handed batter Fakhar Zaman has been added to the T20I squad in Hasan’s place, while no replacement has been named for the ODI squad.

The men in green recently concluded a home series against South Africa, which proved vital for preparation.

Pakistan defeated the Proteas in both the T20I and ODI series, winning the latter 2-1, while the Test series ended in a 1-1 draw.

The ODI series between Pakistan and Sri Lanka will be held at Rawalpindi on November 11, 13 and 15.

Historically, the two sides have faced each other 157 times in ODIs, with Pakistan winning 93 matches, Sri Lanka 59, four matches ending with no result, and one match tied.

Following the ODI leg, Zimbabwe will join Pakistan and Sri Lanka for the T20I tri-series, starting on November 17.

The opening two matches will be played in Rawalpindi, before the tournament moves to Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium for the remaining fixtures, including the final on November 29.

Updated 15-member ODI squad: Shaheen Shah Afridi (captain), Abrar Ahmed, Babar Azam, Faheem Ashraf, Faisal Akram, Fakhar Zaman, Haris Rauf, Haseebullah, Hussain Talat, Mohammad Nawaz, Mohammad Rizwan (wicket-keeper), Mohammad Wasim Jnr, Naseem Shah, Saim Ayub, Salman Ali Agha

Updated 15-member T20I squad: Salman Ali Agha (captain), Abdul Samad, Abrar Ahmed, Babar Azam, Faheem Ashraf, Fakhar Zaman, Mohammad Nawaz, Mohammad Wasim Jnr, Mohammad Salman Mirza, Naseem Shah, Sahibzada Farhan (wicket-keeper), Saim Ayub, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Usman Khan (wicket-keeper), Usman Tariq

Match officials

Pakistan’s Ali Naqvi will officiate the three-match ODI series between Pakistan and Sri Lanka as match referee. The series will be played at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium from 11 to 15 November.

England’s Alexander Wharf, a member of the ICC Elite Panel of Umpires, will stand as on-field umpire for the first ODI alongside Pakistan’s Asif Yaqoob (ICC Emerging Panel of Umpires). Bangladesh’s Saikat Sharfuddoula, also part of the ICC Elite Panel of Umpires, will be the third umpire, while Rashid Riaz (ICC International Panel of Umpires) will serve as the fourth umpire.

For the second ODI on 13 November, Saikat Sharfuddoula will be joined by Faisal Afridi (ICC International Panel of Umpires) as on-field umpires. Alexander Wharf will act as third umpire, while Asif Yaqoob will perform duties of fourth umpire.

The third ODI on 15 November will see Alexander Wharf and Rashid Riaz officiating as on-field umpires, with Saikat Sharfuddoula and Faisal Afridi serving as third and fourth umpires, respectively.

Pakistan put into bat in first ODI against Sri Lanka

Pakistan were put into bat after Sri Lanka won the toss in the opening One-day International of the three-match series at the Pindi Cricket Stadium on Tuesday.

“We would’ve also liked to bowl first too due to the dew [in the later stages],” Pakistan skipper Shaheen Shah Afridi said at the toss. “Pindi is a high-scoring ground.”

Pakistan come into the game on the back of a 2-1 series triumph against a depleted South African side, shorn of big names, last week in Faisalabad.

That series triumph marked a successful beginning to Shaheen’s fresh stint as the new Pakistan captain, having replaced Mohammad Rizwan last month in an abrupt manner.

Sri Lanka, though, present a more difficult challenge...

Agha, Rauf upstage Hasaranga as Pakistan win thriller to go 1-0 up

Sri Lanka fought hard through cameos from Samarawickrama, Theekshana and then Hasaranga but had a tall ask and fell six runs short

Pakistan 299 for 5 (Agha 105*, Talat 62, Nawaz 36*, Hasaranga 3-54) beat Sri Lanka 293 for 9 (Hasaranga 59, Samarawickrama 39, Mishara 38, Rauf 4-61) by six runs

Pakistan withstood a valiant all-round display from Wanindu Hasaranga to come away with a six-run victory in the first ODI against Sri Lanka in Rawalpindi, and with it take a 1-0 lead in the three match series.

Chasing 300 to win, a target that would have constituted the second-highest successful chase in Rawalpindi, Sri Lanka were set up well courtesy an 80-run opening stand, but then lost wickets in clusters through the middle overs to fall behind the required rate.

A few stands through the middle overs still provided Sri Lanka the control they might have been looking for but none of their batters were able to capitalise on their starts.

It meant Hasaranga was left batting with the tail during a 52-ball 59 to take the chase into the final overs, but with 21 needed from 10 he too would fall. Even then, two boundaries from Maheesh Theekshana in the final over gave Sri Lanka hope of an unlikely heist, but Hussain Talat held his nerve with the ball.

This though was a hard-fought win set up by Salman Agha's second ODI century, which helped Pakistan recover from a sluggish start to pose a competitive target. It was then brought home by what was an eventually stellar display from Pakistan's bowlers, but not one without some significant blemishes - the innings saw 26 wides and two dropped catches.
