This is Australia's biggest T20I defeat

This result must have dented Australia's confidence. They are usually fierce competitors but this squad lacks experience and struggled against the trial by spin. Pakistan ticked all the boxes and field a side well suited to spin-friendly conditions.

Australia were bundled out for 96 and simply did not have the skills to dominate against quality spin. Nawaz picked up a five-for, while Shaheen struck twice in the powerplay getting the ball to swing. Abrar and Naseem kept things tight, making it another stress-free day at the office for a well-oiled bowling attack.

Earlier, Saim and Babar both brought up sparkling fifties but it was Shadab's blistering innings that propelled the total past 200. Nafay's cameo proved helpful, while Zampa bowled only two overs and didn't come out to bat (we're hearing he has picked a groin injury) , and others were tonked for plenty.

The gulf between the two sides was evident and once again it turned out to be a complete mismatch

Mitch Marsh, Australia Captain:

Pakistan certainly outplayed us throughout the whole series. As I said yesterday, there are learnings for us in this series. Chasing is hard on that surface; when you are chasing a total on this wicket, you need partnerships. Again, we will take learnings from that.

We will certainly address this series and look forward to the World Cup--exciting times for us. Looking forward to Sri Lanka and thank you to Pakistan for (hosting). It was awesome, the crowd was fantastic and we thoroughly enjoyed it

Pakistan 202 for 5 (Babar 69, Ghori 65, Ellis 2-45) beat Australia 200 (Renshaw 61, Short 55, Minhas 5-32, Abrar 2-44) by five wickets

Arafat Minhas made his ODI debut memorable by picking up five wickets - the first Pakistan bowler to do so in his maiden appearance in the format. His sensational 5 for 32 from ten overs orchestrated his side's comprehensive five-wicket win over Australia in the first ODI at Rawalpindi.

The 21-year-old left-arm fingerspinner used his variations with great guile on a pitch that offered plenty of purchase to the spinners to bundle Australia for 200. Their run chase brought another youngster Ghazi Ghori, a wicketkeeper-batter, in the limelight as he stitched a sturdy 127-run stand with Babar Azam.

Shaheen Afridi on Pakistan quicks losing speed: 'Machines deteriorate with time'

Afridi said Rizwan's omission from the ODIs against Australia was to give youngsters chance ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup

In Pakistan, there is concern about the dwindling speeds of their fast bowlers, to the extent that the National Cricket Academy is devising a plan to try and overcome it, according to ODI captain Shaheen Shah Afridi on the eve of the series opener against Australia in Rawalpindi.

Pakistan have a rich legacy of express fast bowlers, but the current crop remains under scrutiny because of their inability to match the pace of their contemporaries. The drop in speed has more often than not hampered the team's ability to dismiss oppositions twice in Test matches.

Their speeds were under the scanner throughout the 0-2 series Test series defeat for Shan Masood's team in Bangladesh. Across both Tests, the average speed of the Bangladesh fast bowlers (high-130s to mid-140s) was higher than Pakistan's (mid-120s and early 130s).
