JUI-F to boycott K-P Assembly speaker, CM elections
Feb 28
JUI-F's Akram Khan Durrani informed on Wednesday that the party will be boycotting the elections for Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Assembly speaker and deputy speaker, as well as for the slot of provincial chief minister.
Talking to the media, Durrani said that the province was “for the first time witnessing unprecedented situations”.
Lamenting the chaos inside the K-P Assembly today ahead and during the oathtaking ceremony, the JUI-F leader said that despite ideological differences, parties maintained a relationship of respect with each other.
“The situation inside the K-P Assembly today was strange,” he said, “there appeared to be no difference between a provincial assembly and a market”.
Instead of holding a place like the assembly in high regard, the JUI-F leader said that it was disrespected to an extent that would make everyone want to stay away from it.
The JUI-F leader's confirmation came a day after party chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman
warned of a “system collapse” in the country because of excessive interference from the establishment. He had announced that the party would stay away from the upcoming elections of assembly speakers and other higher posts.
Speaking at a news conference in Peshawar, Fazl departed from his oft-repeated stance against PTI founder Imran Khan, saying that he reiterated his longstanding opposition to the imprisonment of political figures.
The “system will collapse” because of the excessive interference from the establishment, Fazl told reporters, adding that the establishment wanted the people elected to the assemblies to be aligned with their preferences.
He recalled his party’s protests against rigging in the 2018 elections and expressed concerns over what he deemed as excessive interference in the country’s politics. Raising alarms, he said the interference had reached a point where even election candidates faced undue influence.
