Resumption of PIA flight operations to UK with Islamabad to Manchester service.

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) was formed through the merger of Orient Airways and government-sponsored PIA in 1955. Orient Airways, was established under the direction of Pakistan's founder, Mohammad Ali Jinnah.
  • Muhammad Ali Jinnah's initiative: In 1945, while independence was still being negotiated, Jinnah saw the need for a national airline to serve the future country.
  • Orient Airways: He sought funding from wealthy businessmen Mirza Ahmad Ispahani and Adamjee Haji Dawood, Ispahani was perso Bengali and Adamjee was Gujrati memon, to start the airline. The private airline, Orient Airways, was registered in Kolkata in 1946.
  • Merger with PIA: After independence, the government formed its own airline entity. Due to financial struggles, Orient Airways was invited to merge with the state-owned Pakistan International Airlines Corporation (PIAC), in 1955, Pakistan flag carrier.
  • Ispahani, the Bengali businessman was first chairman, and Zafar-ul-Ahsan, an ICS, first MD, was Urdu speaking, but Isphanis, Adamjee, and Zafar had strong Karachite links. Later Nur Khan, Asghar Khan made chairman and served honestly. But then PIA was made pasturing land to serve PAF, Sindhis and Punjabis, and a great pride was ruthlessly destroyed in a similar fashion as Pakistan founded by a Karachi born poor Muhammad Ali Jinnah was ruthlessly annexed by army fiefdom to leech on.
In a way story of the destruction of PIA and Pakistan resemble. Both founded by non-natives, were occupied by sons.of the soil on the basis of power, looted money, political and ethnic blackmails, and greed.
That's how great institutions turned into junk and great countries come to their knees.

Between late 1996 and mid-1997, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) leased four Tupolev Tu-154 aircraft (UK-85711, UK-85764, UK-85438 and UK-85416) from Uzbekistan Airways.

PIA utilized these aircraft for various operations including Hajj flights, Domestic services within Pakistan and Regional flights to Uzbekistan in Central Asia.

The original lease agreement was set to run until 2001. However, due to unspecified technical reasons, the contract was terminated prematurely, and all four Tu-154 aircraft were returned to Uzbekistan Airways in the summer of 1997.

The photo, taken on May 14, 1997, shows a Tu-154M in PIA's sports livery with registration number 85711 at Karachi Airport.
