The planes maybe worth alot but the business has collapsed. The government wants the airline to become profitable, debt free, plus the government will not be loosing anymore since they had to pay millions annually to bail PIA out. They still have 25% shares. The new owners will need to invest alot of money to turn the business around. Overall its a big headache which has got ridden off. Ofcourse it would have been better if the government could have turned things around but they failed through their incompetence. Look at what happened to Pakistan Steel Mills.

Allied Bank is a national asset, and PIA is your strategic asset. Every country's national airline is its strategic asset and stands by for any situation, besides commercial business.

In the UK currently PIA has a few flights but they can easily increase to daily flights and make millions in profit, the business is available. Habib Group will make alot of money. We also have 255M population for domestic flights and 10M overseas population. Unfortunately government led businesses lead to big political interference, nepotism, safarish workers etc.

Pak Steel Mills can easily be turned around in to profitable business but again political interference which led to deliberate attemps to make sure it goes down so private businesses can make profit led to its current situation. I believe currently it's shut down due to loss. So overall its not benefiting Pakistan or it's people. Ofcourse we want it to be a national steel mills full of profit but it's failed. Maybe a similar auction needs to be done, i rather Pakistanis buy it than foreigners. 10,000 employees will create jobs, pay tax etc.

Fauji Fertiliser also has the option of buying shares. Habib Group has option of 2 more investors.

Even if they sell the PIA for $2 dollars, it’s a win for Pakistan.

All state owned enterprises should be offloaded to the private sector. SEOs in Pakistan have become bloated organizations where political allies are employed and there’s no operational or financial reason for the continued survival of these SEOs

Allied Bank, K-Electric, PTCL... Examples of better managed privatization. I predict the same for PIA. These Memon business groups are very business savvy.

I think Roosevelt Hotel is supposed to get turned into a high rise place in some partnership with American business groups. India would like to buy that hotel right now--just to spite Pakistan--if for nothing else.


Mr. Arif Habib is saying that more investors want to join the Consortium or business to not only greatly enlarge the PIA fleet (by leasing aircrafts) but also for other privitization efforts which are coming up.

Politics. PPP is already threatening to use 'Unions' and also a legal challenge and target Mr. Arif Habib personally for corruption. The privatization works not only for efficiency's sake but also bypasses the political pressures which have hobbled PIA's privatization for decades.

The Roosevelt Hotel in NYC is not leaving Pakistan's hands unless Pakistan decides or unless some 'Eminent Domain' like laws are applied by the Americans. Neither of those are happening anytime soon.

Wapda also has corruption, but why PIA and steel mills were so ruthlessly destroyed? Because both represented Karachi and many from Karachi were employed in there till late 70s. Then racist quota system exploded and every connected son of the soil got a piece of pia.
Habib bank, united bank, MCB all formed by brilliant mohajirs, nationalized by Bhutto and then filled up with craps from all over Pakistan.
I realize, Karachi, and Karachi based financial, insurance, shipping, airline industries were destroyed systematically with evil motives.

Arif Habib is a memon businessman from Karachi. A large number of Karachiites like him successfully established and ran many kinds of businesses based out of Karachi and over the decades have greatly contributed to Pakistan's economy. They don't fool around when trying to a business, and they are also meritocratic. I am sure he and his group will turn PIA around; his group acquired other businesses where they had no experience with but made those businesses successful.

Habib bank, UBL, MCB founded by Mohajirs. All nationalized and given away to rest of pakistan as tribute. Mohajirs setup shipping industries, colleges and universities, all gone.
