President Dr Masoud Pezeshkian to visit Pakistan on Aug 2: Iranian official

Dawn.com
July 30, 2025

The Iranian president’s political adviser said on Wednesday that Dr Masoud Pezeshkian was due to visit Pakistan on August 2 (Saturday) for a two-day trip, Iran’s IRNA news agency reported.

Pezeshkian will be the second Iranian president to visit Pakistan in as many years. The visit was initially planned for the last week of July.

In April 2024, Ebrahim Raisi undertook a three-day official visit to Pakistan. During the trip — which took place a month before Raisi’s death in a helicopter crash — the foreign dignitary also visited Lahore and Karachi.

In a post on X, Political Adviser to the Iranian President Mehdi Sanai said Dr Pezeshkian would travel to Pakistan on Saturday at the invitation of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

He said official meetings and discussions with “cultural and commercial elites” were on the agenda.

“The relations between the two countries encompass political, economic, religious and cultural dimensions, and the goals of the trip include developing provincial and border cooperation and increasing trade exchanges from the current $3 billion.”

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar previously said that President Pezeshkian would “soon” make an official visit to Islamabad, IRNA reported.

Speaking in an interview on the sidelines of his visit to New York, FM Dar had said Pezeshkian was scheduled to visit Pakistan and expressed hope the trip would take place in early August.

“Pakistan supports diplomacy and a wise approach in the region and welcomes all efforts toward de-escalation and dialogue with Iran,” he was quoted as saying.

He said that he was in close contact with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, adding that Pakistan could not remain silent regarding recent events, including the attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities.

Dar had condemned the Israeli regime’s aggression against Iran and the United States’ attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities. “Diplomacy and dialogue are the only way out of the current situation, and Pakistan will continue to support both sides,” he had added.

PM Shehbaz visited Iran on May 27 as part of his regional tour to friendly countries aimed at expressing gratitude for their support during the conflict with India. He met Iranian leaders, including President Pezeshkian, to strengthen ties and deepen regional cooperation.

He had previously visited Iran in May 2024 to attend the memorial ceremony of former president Raisi and met Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

If Pakistanis actually had a brain and nonfauji foreign policy, they would use their relations with the US to apply for an exemption from US sanctions on Iranian energy, so that affordable oil and gas can be imported from Iran instead of Qatar. It would save the Pakistani budget tons of money and since Pakistan isn't some huge market, ultimately be small potatoes for the US as well. The Pakistani jugar to import Iranian oil and gas through smugglers isnt the right move.

China already imports cheaper energy from Iran but China isnt run by a western worshipping elite class like Pakistan.

This is what happens when you based your opinions on your personal biases. You say things which are not contrary to what is happening on the ground. I hope you got your answer today how USA sanctioned Indian invidiuals/firms for trading in Iranian OIL.

China can do it because they hold the key to minerals all over the world and they threatened to stop the supply to USA recently.

You need to be more subjective and tactic in your analysis.

If you had read my posts I talked about getting an exception to the sanctions. They exist and are given to countries that lobby or for good enough reason.

The US sanctions on Indian companies are also on trading Russian oil.

India and China used to have an exemption for Iranian oil, but that was taken away. All Chinese imports are technically violations of sanctions, but they have been tolerated because the US does not want higher oil prices. Russian exports to China, India , Turkey and others have been tolerated for the same reason.

What do you think the Iran-Pakistan pipeline is? Why do you think it's been halted multiple times? Why did India withdraw from it? What do you think Pakistan has been trying to do for decades?

The Pakistani jugar to import Iranian oil and gas through smugglers isnt the right move.

You believe the Pakistani government is running the smuggling racket? Define smuggling.

Naive to compare ourselves to China's geopolitical and geo-economic clout.

Silly Pakistan. Never thought of it.

Yes , the Iranian oil smuggled into Pakistan involves police, army, paramilitary and politicians. It is in addition to existing smuggling along the western borders which now compromises drugs, weapons, finished goods, dollars and even livestock. It's part of the black economy of Pakistan and main source of corruption.

Regarding waiver from Iran Pakistan pipeline, Pakistani govt has never bothered to even explore the option. They seem to have gotten the idea for it just last year from foreign testimony.

Which makes sense given how lazy, corrupt and incompetent Pakistani govt usually is.

This dude is in Pakistan every other day.

Let him just move into Islamabad at this point I mean his whole admin

I was about to say something like that. Thank you.
Basically, the political bias of many Pakistanis, especially if they are expats, has clouded their judgements. Nothing good can ever happen in Pakistan unless a certain Messiah Khan is the Prime Minister of Pakistan again.
Pathetic.

We are a poor country with a shambolic economy. We cannot keep up with the expenditure associated with his weekly visits.

The involvement of corrupt officials, at any tier, in a personal or collective capacity does not make it Pakistani state policy.

Brother, the Iran-Pakistan pipeline was proposed back in the 50s by Malik Aftab Ahmed Khan. It was conceptualized in 1989. The discussions between Pakistan and Iran started in 1995 and a preliminary agreement was signed the same year. India was then added to it in 1999. In 2004 the project was revived. Iran invited China and Bangladesh to join the project, in 2008 and 2010, respectively. In 2009 India withdrew and then tried to renegotiate in 2010. In 2012 Pakistan set the completion target of 2014. Zardari and Ahmadinejad inaugurated the construction in 2013. Later that same year Nawaz Sharif reiterated Pakistan's commitment to the project after being elected, yet again. Later same year Pakistanis assured the Iranians that the project would continue "despite external pressure". However, in 2014 Pakistan stated that due to the sanctions on Iran the project was not possible at that time. Back and forth until 2024 when Pakistan states it wants to revive the project.

An official waver request might not have been submitted but what do you believe was happening through out these decades? These things do not happen on forms and with open doors.

Dalit heritage you can't nix.......**********************************************

Better a Dalit, or anything else, than an insecure loser who needs to placate his meekness by worshiping an inconsequential foreign state through racist bs against fellow Pakistanis.

You can service as many Iranian appendages as you want but only at your own expense; will not change your or the Iranian standing.

If Pakistan was that desperate for Iranian oil, it could circumvent US sanctions by importing it via China. But no, Pakistan is not that desperate because it gets billions of dollars worth of oil on deferred payments and/or reduced prices from Arab nations.

Where do you get the idea that Iran is willing to sell us cheaper oil?

Maybe Google why Turkiye halted it's oil imports from Iran for 4 years.
