Pakistan Is Ending The Government's Power Monopoly. Will It Work?

For decades, the government was the only buyer of Pakistan's electricity. That's about to change: under CTBCM, industries can buy power directly from producers. The promise is cheaper electricity, higher exports, and fewer inefficiencies. But the first auction covers just 200 MW. In this episode of PowerPlay, we look at May's generation numbers, what broke the old system, and whether this one can actually work.

Thank you to Reon Energy for supporting Pakistan & Counting.

Next 5-6 years will continue to be pain in the ass because of CPEC IPPs debt. But by 2035 Pakistan can potentially provide cheapest electricity rates in the region.

It is very much doable, provided a reasonable transition time is given. The government will have to pull up the operational efficiency (read T&D losses) of the existing discoms.

Regards

Yes It Will There Will Be Some Short Term Disruption But If Bureaucracy Doesn't Ruin It (Which I Fear They Most Likely Will),It Will Do Wonders

1.Bifurcate The DISCOs Into Retail Supply and Infrastructure Companies.Privatize Only The Retail Supply Companies.

2.Auction Retail Supply Licenses In The Same Way Telecom Licenses and Spectrum Are Auctioned So To Create Competition

3.Starting With LNG Power Plants Of Punjab Nuclear Power Plants and Old GENCOs As Well As KAPCO Whose PPA Has Already Expired.Add A Clause In Their PPA By Which Through Mutual Consent Some Capacity Will Be Taken Away From The PPA And Transferred To The Open Competitive Market

Mean the CPEC gift that keep giving.

"Chinese power companies refuse to revise energy agreements and waive late payment surcharge of 170 billion rupees 423 billion rupees outstanding under the government's responsibility for 18 power plants under CPEC"

“Pakistan wants to take a new loan of 10.1 billion dollars so that the most expensive loan taken for CPEC can be repaid. Pakistan's effort is to obtain the new loan at one percent interest, but the question is, why would anyone give them a loan at one percent! Shahbaz Rana ..”

What a disaster. No one will give you loan at 1% interest rate to pay off expensive CPEC debt.

Remember only China stopped. Corrupt nawaz/ahsan/dar triplets wanted to sign more IPP's imported coal deals.

Perhaps we already have a saviour with soo much extra money to spare ?

Chinese are already upset and may not approve it.

yet teby are still in power and we are fked again and agian but no action against them

Their decision making powers has been taken away. They are just a face of military regime now.

Economic policies are being made in GHQ now. Hence the reforms you are seeing but old debt has to be paid even if no new IPPs is signed ever again.
