QUETTA: The Balochistan government has formally merged the Levies Force into the provincial police, abolishing all 'B' areas and converting them into 'A' areas, a move officials say resolves longstanding administrative ambiguity and ensures uniform law-enforcement across the province.

Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti announced the decision on X, highlighting that the merger clarifies the state's responsibilities and strengthens the framework for public safety and protection throughout Balochistan.

The cabinet approved the step, with Sibi and Loralai divisions now declared 'A-Areas'. As per the decision, all Levies personnel, including provincial, ex-federal, and members of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) Wing, have been integrated into the Balochistan Police.

The merged personnel would retain their ranks, pay scales, benefits, and existing nomenclature. Their administration will now fall under the Balochistan Police Act, 2011. The merger also involves the transfer of all infrastructure and resources of the former Levies Force to the police.

As part of a broader effort to enhance policing, the Balochistan Police have launched an accelerated training programme for former Levies personnel shifted from 'B-Area' duties to regular 'A-Area' policing. The initiative began on January 1, 2026, at the Police Training College (PTC) in Quetta.

At least 2 cops injured as police vehicle comes under attack in KP’s Bannu

BANNU: At least two cops were injured in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Bannu as a police vehicle transporting prisoners to Hangu came under attack by “terrorists” on Thursday, sources said.

Sources in Bannu police told Dawn that the vehicle, which belonged to Hangu police and was carrying prisoners for court appearances, came under fire at Domel Link Road.

A source in the Bannu Central Jail’s administration also confirmed this to Dawn, saying that the prisoners were being transported for court hearings as per routine. The vehicle was attacked on the way to the court, the source said.

Sources in Bannu police said the vehicle’s driver changed route and reached Karak following the incident.

The sources said the two injured cops were being provided medical treatment at the district headquarters hospital in Karak, adding that Hangu District Police Officer Khanzaib Mohmand also visited the injured personnel at the hospital.

Meanwhile, an investigation into the attack is under way and security in the area has been beefed up, according to police sources.

In recent days, multiple attacks targeting law enforcement personnel have been reported from various parts of KP.

On January 4, a policeman was martyred in firing by unidentified attackers in the Kashfi Khel area of Bannu.

The martyred constable Rashid Khan was leaving his home for work on Sunday morning when some armed assailants, who were on a motorcycle, opened fire, killing him on the spot.

Last month, five cops were injured after terrorists launched a late-night attack on a police checkpost in the Shaikh Landak area of Bannu.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has established Pakistan’s first-ever dedicated Riot Management Police Force, marking a major milestone in law enforcement and crowd control in the province,” the APP report said on Saturday.

“The new force has been created within the Punjab Police framework to protect the life, property, and safety of citizens as well as government infrastructure.”

The report said that the Riot Management Police, which consists of physically active, capable, and agile officers, was trained specifically to respond to volatile situations with professionalism.

It said the first phase of the Riot Management Police Force includes 5,000 personnel, out of which 3,000 have successfully completed training. The report said these personnel will be deployed across Punjab’s regional headquarters, with 250 officers assigned to each region to ensure “swift and organized response” to unrest.

The force is legally protected under a vague Good faith clause.

  • "Good Faith" Clause: The legal protection is contingent on actions being taken "in good faith". This does not shield officers who commit acts that are clearly illegal, malicious, or outside the scope of their official duties.

Under the amended law, offenders may face up to 10 years' imprisonment and fines of up to Rs500,000.

A major feature of the amendment is the statutory recognition of the RMP as a specialised unit within Punjab Police, mandated to respond to riots, violent protests and mob violence. Officials said the unit will be equipped with modern protective gear and receive advanced training to strengthen law enforcement's operational capacity.

The law also introduces the concept of "riot zones," to be declared by the deputy commissioner and district police officer, allowing authorities to cordon off affected areas and operate under designated incident commanders. Police personnel acting in good faith within such zones will be provided legal protection.

Cases related to riots and violent protests will now be tried in sessions courts to expedite proceedings.

Punjab Police said the amendments aim to balance the right to peaceful protest with the need to prevent violence and protect public property.

1. Title changed to reflect correct title of original article source.

2. So basically this Elite Force 2.0, like daddy like daughter. Also note Zardari has SSU in Sindh and Nawaz had Elite Force in Punjab, now baby nawaz wants "Riot Management Police". 😅🤣

Guess she wasn't happy with controlling just the CCD she now also must control ARU which already existed and created this new Anti Riot Unit. Talk about re-inventing the wheel.
