Pakistan seeks $10b in US backstop facility

Pakistan Seeks US EXIM Bank Financing for PIA Aircraft, Refinery, and Reko Diq

Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb held talks with US Export-Import Bank Chairman John Jovanovich on financing opportunities for aviation, refinery modernization and the Reko Diq mining project during his visit to New York.

The meeting focused on potential US EXIM Bank financing for Pakistan International Airlines’ (PIA) aircraft procurement, refinery upgrades and the Reko Diq project. Both sides also agreed to continue work on a broader cooperation framework while prioritizing specific transactions.

Aurangzeb said PIA was interested in Boeing aircraft, particularly 787 Dreamliners, and sought support for a financing package covering aircraft and engines. He also raised the need for spare parts to bring grounded Boeing 777 aircraft back into service.

The discussions also covered possible financing for aircraft pre delivery payments, while refinery upgrades were identified as another potential area for US EXIM Bank support.

On Reko Diq, Aurangzeb highlighted the project’s importance to Pakistan’s future exports and the cost of delays. He also welcomed US EXIM Bank’s continued commitment to the mining project.

The meeting was part of Aurangzeb’s engagements in New York on the third day of his visit to attend the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly alongside the Prime Minister of Pakistan. During the day, he also participated in the Digital Cooperation Organization’s High Level Ministerial Dialogue, where he discussed digital public infrastructure, cashless payments, workforce skills and Pakistan’s approach to virtual assets.

Aurangzeb said digital transformation was important for Pakistan’s transition from economic stabilization to sustainable growth. He also called for greater cooperation among DCO member states to share successful approaches and attract investment in the digital economy.

USA rejects Pakistan request.

Sad news. But note what kind of spin was given to this news by the usual suspects of a certain 'political party' of Pakistan. Their posts are in this very thread. Heck, they are so anti-Pakistan that one of them--generally a decent PDF guy--even referred to the recent Israelis elections where the Arab parties have somewhat given importance just to target Pakistan. The Imran Cultists have gone crazy and it seems most of them reside in Western countries, living in their bubble. The Pahalvi Brigade of Pakistan!

Pakistan is a cheap loan addict in the same with way a crack addicts lusts for heroin.

I am of the view, that this is good news and this should "force" Pakistan to solve its economic mismanagement rather than coast from one lean loan, or cheap credit facility to another one.

The IMF programme is medicine that Pakistan must consume to get better again .. no way around it.

The $10 billion facility was not a 'loan' and it would have helped Pakistan with some more cushion, thus helping with the Credit Ratings and all the other things while other measures would be taken. But this was spun by a certain political party's members as a 'loan'.
Corrections to the economy will have to be made regardless of loans coming in or not but better to be on better financial status while making the corrections otherwise the common people would suffer even more.

They have a problem with Pakistan's alliance with China. They also wanted them to be non nuclear, submissive to India and out the way like Bangladesh.

Unfortunately Pakistan wasn't able to convert the early favour because its economy never developed and India took full advantage and naturally have greater influence in Washington.
