KARACHI: The most expensive deal in HBL PSL history has been finalized. The four-year media rights have been sold to Walee Technologies for Rs 26 billion. The board will receive approximately Rs 6.5 billion annually. Walee is also the owner of the Pindi franchise. Matches are likely to be broadcast on the state-run television network.

Three companies participated in the bidding process—two for broadcast rights and one solely for digital rights. Walee’s combined bid amounted to Rs 26 billion, while the reserve price was set at Rs 23.5 billion (Rs 16.5 billion for TV and the remaining for live streaming).

A private sports channel offered Rs 9 billion for TV rights only, while another company bid Rs 3.5 billion for digital rights.

The PCB had recently issued an advertisement for the four-year PSL media rights, attracting several interested parties. Two major sports channels also intended to compete, but one allegedly had outstanding dues of Rs 470 million, while the other owed more than Rs 600 million. The board gave both parties time to resolve the matter, but payments were not made, leading to their disqualification. On Friday, the review committee also rejected one channel’s request.

To prevent alleged collusion among channels, the board did not allow consortium bids this time. In Pakistan, companies were allowed to bid for broadcast rights, live streaming rights, or both. The bid security for each category was Rs 100 million. The winning company’s amount will be adjusted, while others will receive refunds.

Last year, 34 PSL matches were played. With the addition of two new teams, the total will increase to 44 matches. According to regulations, after deducting production expenses, if a broadcast deal exceeds Rs 3 billion, an additional $500,000 will be allocated for signing icon foreign cricketers. Of the remaining amount, 80% will go to the PCB and 20% to franchises.

Last year, production expenses exceeded Rs 1 billion. The 11th edition of the league will begin on March 26. It is worth noting that the previous TV rights two years deal was worth Rs 6.5 billion annually.. However, the board is still awaiting payment of a significant amount. This time, a bank guarantee of Rs 6.5 billion is also being obtained from the successful bidder, which can be encashed in case of non-payment.

PSL CEO Salman Naseer and Gohar Shah (CD Ventures) talking to the media and announcing the rebranding of Sialkot Stallionz to Multan Sultans.

The Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise Sialkot Stallionz has officially been rebranded as Multan Sultans following a majority takeover by CD Ventures, league officials confirmed on Tuesday.

The announcement was made at a joint press conference in Lahore, attended by PSL chief executive Salman Naseer, franchise owner Hamza Majeed and CD Ventures head Gohar Shah.

CD Ventures has acquired a majority stake in the franchise, which was originally bought by OZ Developers for Rs1.85 billion at the PSL auction held in January. Salman Naseer said the franchise’s annual valuation has now risen to Rs2 billion following the new investment.

“After becoming CEO, Gohar Shah requested a change in the franchise name, and that request has been approved,” Naseer said. “The team will now compete as Multan Sultans.”

Hamza Majeed described the deal as a strategic partnership cleared by both the Pakistan Cricket Board and the PSL.

“With the approval of the PCB and PSL, this partnership has been finalised,” he said. “Gohar Shah has joined us as a strategic partner and will serve as the franchise’s CEO.”

Majeed praised Shah’s enthusiasm, adding that his energy would strengthen the franchise ahead of the new season.

Lahore's Gaddafi Stadium will host both the opening match and the final of the 2026 Pakistan Super League (PSL) season, the fourth time in five years it has staged the final. This was confirmed as the PCB announced the schedule of the 11th edition of the PSL, which runs from March 26 to May 3.

It is the first season in the league's history to feature eight teams, with the expanded competition consisting of 44 matches played across six cities in Pakistan. Faisalabad and Peshawar have been roped in as additional venues on top of the traditional four of Lahore, Karachi, Rawalpindi and Multan.

Faisalabad hosts seven games, while Peshawar's Imran Khan Cricket Stadium hosts the March 28 fixture between home side Peshawar Zalmi and Rawalpindi Pindiz.

The increased number of teams has led to a change in format. For the first time, all teams will not take on each other twice, as has been the case in the past. Instead, each side will play ten fixtures, playing seven teams on two occasions, and just three teams twice. Unsurprisingly, the marquee fixtures, most notably Karachi vs Lahore, will take place twice - both times at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.

While Lahore hosts the most games at 15, Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium is a close second at eleven. It is the only venue to play official host to two teams in the competition. With Islamabad and its twin city Rawalpindi both featuring teams in the league, the stadium will play official host to both, including serving as the venue for the two derbies between the sides on April 4 and 23

While there are more host cities than ever, the tournament is primarily concentrated in Lahore and Rawalpindi, with 26 of the league's 44 matches taking place in either of the two cities. The National Stadium in Karachi, Pakistan's largest city, will see just six games played, even fewer than Faisalabad (seven), which makes its debut as a PSL host.

Bar the first qualifier in Rawalpindi, the playoffs and the final all take place in Lahore, with the final on May 3, and May 4 held as a reserve day.

Lahore Qalandars are the defending champions, having won three of the last four editions.
