The calculation of the powers that be, by which I don’t mean just “them” but all the elite and entrenched status quo winners of Pakistan’s current system, is that they have alienated enough people, especially the diaspora, that the negative press is not being pushed back upon by those same regular people and diaspora.
Consequently, Leftist in the west are looking at what happened in Islamabad in a similar manner to what happens in junta state like Myanmar. Going forward it these non-Pakistanis that could derail Pakistan’s efforts to change its image (without structural political and economic reform) and attract FDI or even potential future bailouts from the IMF.
Currently it may just he leftists, but it could easily become a bipartisan issue, with right wing westerners brushing Pakistan with the same brush as Afghanistan or Iran.
This is the consequence of a house divided.
