Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's (PTI) Rallies / Protests

PTI should try to organize mass workers strikes around the country to leverage numbers of supporters in locations all around the country.

If they can’t make it Islamabad, they can make the economic effects felt in Islamabad.

It will also catch the global eye this way.

ISLAMABAD: Amid reports of negotiations between the government and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has asserted that the talks have ended "inconclusively" as former first lady Bushra Bibi, who is leading the caravan, "can smell blood and is in no mood to compromise".

"She [Bushra] knows she is close to D-Chowk and has become a leader [...] she will press the advantage she has," the PML-N leader said while speaking on Geo News programme 'Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Sath'.

He noted that the government had no choice "to use force" against the protesters who were trying to enter Islamabad. "They [PTI] believe they have an advantage and will keep marching on [Islamabad]," he added.

Asif was of the view that the government’s "clear cut" resolve to defend the capital at any cost should be manifested and especially when a foreign dignitary, Belarus President, is visiting the country.

In response to a question, the defence minister said that the former first lady has achieved a "lifetime opportunity" to become a leader and "she will press this advantage".

When asked about the negotiations, he reiterated that the lady, Bushra Bibi, was in "no mood" to compromise" and "power is in her hand and she can feel it".

"Imran knows his wife is controlling the situation," he said, reiterating that the government should demonstrate its resolve as the situation is deteriorating and if they reached D-Chowk and staged a sit-in "it will be a huge setback for the country".

Earlier, sources told Geo News that the first round of talks between the government and the former ruling party ended inconclusively.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi held negotiations with PTI leaders Barrister Gohar Ali Khan and Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif on behalf of the federal government.

They said PTI stood firm on its demand to ensure the immediate release of the PTI founder, who has been behind bars since August last year.

The PTI leaders, insiders said, also rejected the government's offer to hold a sit-in at the Parade Ground or Peshawar Mor in the federal capital.

The PTI supporters have entered the federal capital on the call of their jailed party founder to gather at D-Chowk in the capital and stay there until their demands are met. The release of jailed ex-premier among other issues is what the party seeks.

Authorities have enforced a security lockdown for the last two days to block the protesters, whom jailed PTI founder Imran Khan has called on to march on parliament for a sit-in demonstration to demand his release, while highways into the city have been barricaded.

The government has used shipping containers to block major roads and streets in Islamabad, most of them patrolled by large contingents of police and paramilitary personnel in riot gear.

The Imran Khan-founded party, in recent months, has marched on the federal capital on multiple occasions which has seen its workers clashing with the law enforcement agencies (LEAs).

The rally has been declared illegal and Islamabad is under lockdown

At least one policeman has been killed and more than 50 injured, Pakistan’s authorities say, as officials try to stop thousands of opposition protesters reaching Islamabad.

Scores of supporters of jailed former PM Imran Khan have been arrested and the capital is under lockdown for a second day.

Khan has been detained for more than a year on various charges, but remains hugely popular despite his legal troubles.

His wife, Bushra Bibi, told supporters on Monday the march would continue until her husband was freed.

Route of the march

Roads to D Chowk - a key point in central Islamabad near government buildings, the Supreme Court and parliament - remain blocked with shipping containers to keep protesters at bay. The streets are lined with coaches that have carried police from around the country to the capital.

Paramilitaries in riot gear are lined up, water cannon ready, but on Monday the atmosphere was calm as protesters were yet to reach the city.

As news circulated that the protesters were on the move, the police began to close more streets and move some of their officers around the city.

Some internet services have been suspended. Schools and colleges have been shut because of fears of violence.

Ah yes the 'Punjab' Rangers i.e. the private militia of the Noonies. They shot several people in our region in AJK dead, and then ran off when all hell broke loose.

If a nation decides to change its fate, these dhongi logics can wait. Ghareeb ki hi jaan khayi hai hakumat ne tou ghareeb hi inko power se nikaalega kiunke jiske paas maal hai usko is system se zyada problem nahi.

Supporters of Imran Khan set off for the capital on Sunday

Imran Khan’s party has been protesting for months. The latest rally came after he issued a "final call" to his supporters, urging them to stay in the capital until their demands were met.

They are also calling for the overturning of election results they say were rigged - a claim disputed by the government.

The march, which began on Sunday, has seen police using tear gas against protesters, who have responded by pelting officers with stones.

Police told the BBC on Monday that 139 people had been arrested.

Khan’s wife is one of the leaders of the main convoy.

"Until Khan comes to us, we will not end this march," Bushra Bibi told crowds as the rally neared the capital.

"I will stand till my last breath and you have to support me. This is not just about my husband but about this country and its leader," she said.

Bushra Bibi was sentenced alongside Khan in January, but released on bail in late October.

Although Khan has now been behind bars for more than a year, he is still the dominant force of Pakistan’s opposition politics.

He was voted out of power by parliament in 2022 amid reports that he had fallen out with the country's powerful military.

He denies all the charges against him, which range from corruption to instigating violence to getting married to Bushra Bibi illegally.

In February’s general election, his party was banned from standing. Independent candidates backed by the PTI unexpectedly won the most seats – but not enough to form a government.

Khan accused the two parties now in government – the PML-N and PPP – of stealing the election. The authorities deny accusations of vote tampering.

The main battlefield right now is at this placed called 26 number. Based on sources on the ground, ranges and police have back offed and retreated to ‘Tarnol’. ‘26 number’ is where the firings happened.

You’re “worried” about daily wagers but don’t give a shit about lakhs of people marching towards the capital from across the country? 🙄
I am not worried, I am telling a reason why strikes aren't effective cause people not gonna adhere to them. And I actually am a regular attendant at PTI protest and marches so give me a break.
