PTI civil disobedience: Imran warns 1st phase to kick off Sunday if ‘legitimate demands’ unmet

PTI founder Imran Khan on Thursday warned that the first phase of the party’s civil disobedience movement — boycotting remittances — would kick off from December 22 if his “legitimate demands” were not met by the government.

Earlier this month, the former prime minister had warned of a civil disobedience movement from Dec 14 if his demands about the release of political prisoners facing trial and the formation of a judicial commission to probe the events of May 9, 2023, and November 26 were unmet.

His sister Aleema Khanum had said on Tuesday that Imran had warned that he would ask overseas Pakistanis to halt remittances if the government failed to meet his demands. PTI lawyer Chaudhry Faisal Hussain said a day ago that Imran had asked the party leadership to wait till Sunday before going ahead with the campaign.

A statement issued on the incarcerated ex-premier’s X account today shared the “important message” from Imran.

Reiterating the demands, the statement said the first phase comprising boycotting remittances would begin from Sunday if Imran’s demands were not met.

“We will appeal to Pakistanis living abroad that the situation in Pakistan is evident to you; democracy, the judiciary, and the media has been stifled, and a period of oppression and fascism is ongoing. Therefore, we urge you to start the boycott of remittances.”

The statement said that the party’s offer for negotiations was ridiculed and it was framed as if the PTI had surrendered. It added that the offer for talks and delaying the civil disobedience movement was made in the “broader national interest”.

“If the government shows no interest, we will not force negotiations upon them. Our offer should never be seen as a sign of our weakness. If the government still wants to prevent the civil disobedience movement, they must contact us regarding our two demands or convince us that these demands are unconstitutional and cannot be addressed.

“I have invited a negotiation team for a meeting in jail and provided their names. Now, we will see whether the government allows them to meet with me or not,” the statement said.

Following Imran’s arrest on May 9, 2023, from the Islamabad High Court’s premises, riots erupted across the country that went on for at least 24 hours. At least 10 people lost their lives and hundreds sustained injuries, while approximately 40 public buildings and military installations were damaged.

The state then launched a severe crackdown on his party, rounding up thousands of PTI workers and almost the entire top-tier leadership, with many still facing court proceedings under serious charges.
If IK can succeed in this, he will become a historic figure.

The Richard Grenell twitter situation and how China has been seen to been stepping back from some economic activity in Pakistan highlight how even if internally babu logic can fly (see Najma Sethi recent interviews), the rest of the world is sick and tired of the bull coming out of Pakistan.

It reminds me of this Bill Burr joke about putting kids to bed on trumped up charges.

Seems like it will be only a matter of time before Imran Khan has to be released.

Pondering, why did the military oust him and put him in jail? Was it out of national interests or was it because he posed a threat to traditional dominance of Army in the internal politics of Pakistan?

or maybe something entirely else?

Yea
I see what you mean.
Could be as simple as that.
Its easy to forget that politics is the sums of personalities and egos clashing and vanquishing.

Biden’s team (the long term policy officials, from both parties) have had a general anger at Pakistan, for a long time. Once Pakistan’s usefulness of met with the exit from Afghanistan they wanted to punish Pakistan. Pakistan offered up IK as the sacrificial figure for the “all sins forgiven” terms or else the pain could have be distributed to the hundreds of retired Pakistani officers and their families living in the US, as one YouTuber pointed out is a known point of leverage.

IK didn’t help his case by speaking to openly (running his mouth, if I maybe crass) during and right after the fall of Kabul, a shocking and deeply humiliating moment for Biden and his officials who had spent literally decades working on Afghan policy.

Now that Trump is coming, it does seem just a matter of time before IK is released, which is why the army is still trying to force a deal on their terms, such as IK needs to negotiate with the “government” in a roundabout way to get IK to accept the “government’s” legitimacy.

When they ousted IK, IK didn’t have a plan in place, he’s winging it just like most of the politicians in his generation (not because their inept but Pakistan is that chaotic and unprincipled to be able to plan based on rules and laws, see the overturning of the military courts for civilians ban by the Supreme Court)

The army own fumblings are making IK more and more into the anti-status quo figure day by day, not unlike Trump in that regard with the democrats and their lazy social policies. Hence why it makes sense to have IK coming out of jail to be a populist foil, which can best deal with Trump.

It would be best for the system to allow IK to return to power on the actual legitimate results of the February elections, and prep for how to put a united front to secure national interests. Biden “all sins forgiven” deal is set to expire. Furthermore Pakistan needs to have a real booming economy and something to work with the US upon to placate their uneasy feeling towards Pakistan.

P.s. Biden described the Pakistani nation as being the most dangerous. While it may be semantics, but nation could more aptly be about the people, and not the country/state, so he fears the genuine aspirations of the Pakistani people. Pakistan has had nuclear weapons for more than 4 decades, tested them over 26 years ago. Perhaps Biden’s memory doesn’t recall all that has been done in the past two decades to keep the doctrine and capabilities India centric. As far as the quip about lack of cohesion, which he made two years ago, it’s not like he did anything to support that, giving the wrong signals to local elites to undermine the then relative stability in 2022.

It may therefore also be why all the rhetoric about democracy is a facade as he never bothered to be about Pakistan, and why the Orwellian “Pakistan Democratic Movement” has been ruling Pakistan as a facade for martial law as proven by military courts being used to try civilians.

I boycotted all remittance the day IK was removed, I stopped funding NGO's
in Pakistan as well.

All overseas need to boycott remittance and investment in Pakistan.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, has called on overseas Pakistanis to stop sending remittances to the country, ARY News reported.

Speaking to reporters outside Adiala jail after meeting Imran Khan, Aleema Khan said that the PTI founder said the government has no intentions to engage in talks with PTI, urging the overseas Pakistanis to halt remittances from tomorrow.

Aleema Khan reiterated her brother’s demands for the release of prisoners, the establishment of a judicial commission on May 9 and November 26, and assured that Imran Khan would retract his call if dialogue with the government commenced.

The development came after PTI leader Omar Ayub claimed that the government was not serious to hold negotiations with PTI.

The Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly Omar Ayub said that the PTI’s negotiations’ team was not given access to meet the PTI’s founder in Adiala Jail.

He said the party’s founder formed the negotiation team so as no one could say that the team was not formed for talks.

“You have to request for the meeting in Adiala jail. The leaders who visited jail, were appeared in cases,” Ayub said.

Earlier, Imran Khan threatened to call for halting remittances if his demands remain unmet, according to a statement by his sister, Aleema Khan, ARY News reported.

Imran Khan’s sister said that the founder reiterated his stance three times: a judicial commission comprising three Supreme Court judges must be formed, and innocent prisoners should be released.

She claimed that millions of people fell below the poverty line after the PTI government was ousted, and citizens are grappling with economic hardships.

Imran Khan wants overseas Pakistanis to halt remittances from tomorrow

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan asked on Saturday the overseas Pakistanis to halt the remittances from tomorrow (Sunday).

Expressing her thoughts, the PTI founder sister, Aleema Khan said: "The deposed premier has demanded the release of unjustly detained workers."

She said that people recognised those standing with the truth. She expressed the belief that the PTI founder would be convicted in the 190 million pound reference case.

Aleema maintained: "The trial court sentences often saw relief from high courts."

Calling the case absurd, she questioned: "Why forming a welfare organisation was being penalised?"

Aleema expressed confidence that the reference would ultimately be dismissed in the high court. She confirmed plans to appeal the case in the high court if a conviction occurred, predicting Imran Khan might face three to four additional months in jail.

Discussing political matters, she highlighted that further cases against party workers clarified the government's unwillingness to hold negotiations. Imran Khan demanded the release of unjustly detained workers and an investigation by judicial commissions into incidents on May 9 and November 26.

She made it clear that the campaign will be suspended if discussions commenced over the two demands.
