A landslide blocked Baltistan Road near Shangus in Skardu’s Roundu Valley on Thursday, leaving thousands of passengers and tourists stranded.

Authorities suspended traffic as falling debris and large boulders blocked the route, while residents raised concerns over the lack of safety measures on the accident-prone road.

The Gilgit-Baltistan Disaster Management Authority (GBDMA) said debris was still sliding down the hillside, making the area dangerous for travellers.

Large boulders could not be removed with ordinary machinery, prompting the Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) to arrange a specialised team for blasting and clearance work.

Authorities advised the public to avoid unnecessary travel and warned against crossing the landslide-hit section due to the risk of further rockfalls. Travellers were also urged to contact police helpline 15 for the latest road updates before setting out.

The 167-kilometre Juglot-Skardu Road, also known as Baltistan Road, runs along the Indus River and serves as a key route for residents of Skardu, Kharmang, Shigar and Ghanche districts. The reconstructed road was inaugurated in 2021.
