‘Pakistan’s poverty rate higher than India, B’desh’

I think 2 days ago a family of 4-5 did suicide, it was in karachi I guess. The male (head if family) was only 28, married with kid and had one sister. All did suicide. Because they were struggling and no one came to support. Close family members even blocked their contact numbers.

It's a countrywide phenomenon. People have lost all hope amidst this cannibalism.

The article is new .... however........... The data behind it is not.

Pakistan’s 38.3% figure comes from the 2017- 18 household survey. even the article admits that each country was measured in a different year, so this is neither current data nor a proper like-for-like comparison.

I never said poverty does not exist or that Pakistan is raining money. I said you are presenting almost decade-old data as today’s reality. A new publication date does not magically make old data new.

also it is now coming to light how deeply PTI’s KP government may have been involved in appeasing and facilitating the TTP. with murad saeed being hosted by TTP.

So spare us the usual one line dictatorship lecture. Pakistan has serious problems, but selectively blaming everything on one institution while ignoring the mess your own party helped create is not analysis.
The one institution that has ruled Pakistan illegally since 1958, the army, absolutely bears responsibility for the deepening poverty in the country. The data is also for all of Pakistan, not just KP.

Your other comments are attempts at denial and distraction.

While you are technically right, unfortunately doesn't change things for the better. Because Pakistan actually worsened in the period after that especially 2020-2024, partly because of issues that were beyond its control.

Your other point that it is unwise to selectively blame only the Army is on the money. Civilian administrations have shown no greater wisdom in handling development matters.

Yes civilian administrations who were weak , sabotaged and dismissed by the same army ruling illegally are equally to blame. Lol bohot kamzoor propaganda hai.

Again with the youtube videos. Mumbai has as expensive a real estate as anywhere in the world - think NYC, Hong Kong etc. - that doesn't mean that people in Mumbai have same living standards as NYC.

Similarly, because the real estate is expensive doesn't mean that people in Mumbai are "less" rich/well-of vs. Karachi or other similar cities. This kind of stupid comparisons aside, look at the real poverty number across the vast population of respective countries. Or you can live in la la land where Pakistan doesn't have any poverty

You can't pay me enough to live in this biohazard

Thanks to my forefathers for catching the right train.

No military dictator ever told the agriculturalists and industrialists to not pay their fair share of taxes. This is while every single member of the military pays their due share just like the rest of Pakistan's MNC sector. Their pay comes into the account only after all the taxes are deducted.

If there is no money for poverty alleviation, what is the root cause? To this day, Pakistan's tax collection rate is the lowest in South Asia.

Everyone wants free schools, healthcare, roads, transport but nobody is willing to fork over the taxes owed.

nothing wrong with having such population as long as our economy is fixed, we can actually sustain such population
No need for any de-population agendas , let our people have fun and increase the ummah chummah no worries.
I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic or not. If not, this is precisely the mentality that is keeping our nation in stone age. For a country the size of Pakistan, our population is a drain on resources. We need to slow down the population growth, we have enough humans - and these humans need to learn to stand on their own feet, instead of relying on handouts.

The state of Pakistan is surviving due to IMF, World Bank, Aid etc...and a major chunk of Pakistanis are surviving because overseas Pakistanis fund their lifestyle. How is this sustainable?

No doubt Pakistan suffers severe poverty. But claiming it's "worse off" than Bharat & Bangladesh casts doubt, considering their governments are notorious for fabricating stats, going back decades. Not to mention their overcrowded hygiene levels are worse; especially Bangladesh.

One of the reasons of our present situation is our comparison needle towards the lowliest possible scale to the East. We needs to make our role model to countries like China, Malaysia, Indonesia etc not to some uncivilized garbage dump.

One of my talking points on this topic in another thread..

That thing about street level living standard is a very good point raised by you. I always say this to my fellow countrymen who get insecure about Indian gdp numbers, that despite being relatively poor we have it much better at ground level.

Recently I saw an Indian woman's video on Youtube comparing apartments for rent in Mumbai. In the 30k bracket there was an extremely dirty half bedroom flat with an equally shitty bathroom. In comparison in Karachi the equivalent of 30k INR which roughly becomes 90k PKR, one can easily get a decent 2-3 bedroom apartment with clean attached bathrooms. Not to mention the overcrowding everywhere. Man I despise crowds like a plague, at least we have plenty of relatively empty touristic stops up north.

If I got time I will make a dedicated thread on this topic. But that said we should not be comparing ourselves to India, otherwise we will always remain in this shitty situation. I think one of the reasons of our downfall is that both the elites and commons of our country have made India a threshold for progress, we think that if we are slightly better than them in any field then we have won, and that is the biggest mistake ever. Instead we should be looking towards Western/Northern Europe and China as role models of development.

Without land reform you will be chasing shadows forever there will be hundreds of reasons but the root cause is always land reform.

Luckily both India and Bangladesh went through a period of socialism.

Btw, socialism in the long run is bad. It’s like a pain killer.

Both countries had glorious champions of the poor. Especially within Bengal.

Bangladesh got rid of the feudal system altogether.

India was less successful but still came out much better.

Pakistan never went through socialism.

Imran Khan is the only non- feudal they have elected. But he was booted out by US proxies within Pakistan.

Land is the most precious commodity in a low urban and low industrialised country.

When most of it is concentrated within a tiny number of people - it creates gross inequality and power imbalances.

one can argue against the figures but the facts are stark and clear to see. no amount of whataboutism and shifting blame can hid the fact that successive leaderships of Pakistan, Hybrid, Military, civlians have all failed in providing the basic needs to the population.

yes it is a tough neighbourhood and the American unsatiable need for invading countries and Afghanistan's centuries old warmongering does not help but there are oppertuntities as well for those who are sincere and dedicated to bring things under control and not just concentrate on settling in the West after they are dethroned.

No military dictator ever told the agriculturalists and industrialists to not pay their fair share of taxes.

You got it the wrong way round.

No military dictator had the mandate to order the feudals to pay their taxes.

In any case, when inequality is this bad - taxation is not enough.

That’s basically trickle down economics.

You need a one-off rebalancing through wealth redistribution.

For rural and low industrialised countries - the answer is land redistribution.

That’s what Imran Khan was planning before the US intervened.

Calling others ' Low IQ'' while mixing up two completely different datasets is quite an achievement.... Bravo

HIES 2024-25 is a separate PBS survey. The 38.3% figure being discussed comes from the UNDP /OPHI Multidimensional Poverty Index, and UNDP’s own Pakistan profile clearly says the data used is from 2017-18. Even the dawn article admits the countries were measured in different years.

Next time, read the data before giving lectures about research and IQ.
I am not above accepting a mistake. I had relied on an LLM for the fact check and , on checking the data myself, I realise it was wrong.

However, to no suprise, I discovered that the actual data only reinforces what I had said about askaris and patwaris being low IQ or liars. Since you had read the report, you would surely know it says the data for Pakistan is from the period 2014 to 2018, not just 2018, and I am sure you know who was in power in Pakistan during that period.

So, while I concede that I made a misstatement about the source of the data, my general observation about askaris and patwaris being low IQ OR liars still holds.
