US private industries have lots more money to spend on athletes, also US is a developed nation that has many more facilities in every community to train athletes, so the federal gov itself naturally can do less.

When Chinese children cry in training, it's government sponsored torture, when US children cry in training, it's hard work and perseverance.

Takes time to see the results, a new generation of sports players to develop. China maybe building more new facilities at the fastest rate in the world, but overall numbers US may be still leading for now.

How about US ranks the count by total number of all medals, but not by number of gold medals as in pretty much every other country and the Olympics official org.

We can't help it if your country's complete ineptitude in not combining the Hong Kong Team with the China Team cost you the medal count.
