You post reminds me of a very interesting conundrum the PPP faced as a result of the 1988 elections! So after 11 years, the PPP, under Benazir Bhutto, had a chance to form a govt in Islamabad but not in Punjab, which was a crucial province. And Benazir Bhutto was facing a very hostile Establishment!! The Opposition was led by Nawaz Sharif with his own large vote bank but had scored a slightly higher number of elected politicians in the Punjab Assembly. But there were still enough 3rd Party / Independent elect to make a Benazir govt in Punjab too. She knew governing the Center without Punjab would be very difficult, especially when the Establishment was dead set against her. Some of her advisers told her to sit in the Opposition in the Center and let Nawaz form a govt in the Center and Lahore. But some of her advisers told her to give her party workers some relief after 11 years of Zia's brutal rule.
So she made a Deal with the Devil--the Establishment of Pakistan--under President Ghulam Ishaq Khan. Who sacked her after barely less then two years of her rule. And then they engineered the infamous Mehran Gate Scandal for the 1990 elections and reduced her from about 90 National Assembly seats to only about 15 in the 1990 elections even then her popular vote was very high--almost around Nawaz Sharif's then. But she sat on the Opposition bench in the National Assembly of Pakistan and gave Nawaz a tough time in the Assembly and eventually toppled him from power in just three years.
Benazir Bhutto was a 'politician'. Not some opportunistic hypocrite who claims not to do 'politics' but does everything a politician does. Imran Khan followers here just don't know how much we oldies know from our experiences, observations and from the history of Pakistan.
