LAHORE: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Sunday declared its intention to reorganise its presence in Punjab, the largest province and a key stronghold of the party.

Hammad Azhar, PTI Central Punjab General Secretary and Acting Punjab President, announced the decision to restructure the party's operations across the province.

He highlighted the need for permanent office-bearers in all districts of Punjab, following the departure of former office-bearers elected to the assemblies.

Last week, Azhar resigned from his roles as the PTI Central Punjab General Secretary and acting Central Punjab President, citing legal challenges that impeded his duties.

In a written communication to PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan and Secretary General Omar Ayub Khan, Azhar outlined the pressures he faced, including involvement in multiple legal cases and a ban from electronic media by the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA).

He described raids on his home, harassment of his family, and the necessity of relocating them abroad for safety. Despite these adversities, Azhar continued his work for the party from an undisclosed location since May 2023.

Azhar stated that, after careful consideration, he decided to step down from his roles, expressing concern for the party's well-being and his commitment to its interests. He pledged to remain a loyal and ideological worker for PTI.

However, PTI declined to accept Azhar's resignation, urging him to persist in his duties. Gohar revealed that he had discussed the matter with party founder Imran Khan, who instructed them not to accept Azhar's resignation. He lauded Azhar's dedication and bravery amid PTI's challenges.

Azhar expressed gratitude for Imran Khan's trust and acknowledged the weight of responsibility placed on him during this turbulent period. He vowed to uphold Imran's trust and continue serving the party diligently.

RAWALPINDI: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and former prime minister Imran Khan expressed his willingness on Tuesday to remain in jail while urging authorities to release other leaders of his party.

Speaking to the media during the hearing of the £190 million reference, Imran again urged Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa to hear PTI's May 25 petition and form a judicial commission to investigate the May 9 incidents.

"There has been no inquiry on the incidents so far," stressed Imran and added that "concealing" information is also a crime.

"A political party is being eliminated based on the May 9 incidents," said the PTI founder.
Advocating for a comprehensive investigation of the February 8 elections, Imran demanded scrutiny, questioning the legitimacy of the Election Commission Pakistan (ECP) to conduct inquiries amidst allegations of rigging.

In a plea for fairness, Imran urged authorities to consider releasing other PTI leaders while he remains incarcerated, stating, "If you want to keep me in jail, keep me but release the others."

He cited the health concerns of party leaders such as Dr. Yasmeen, Mehmoodul Rashid, Alia Hamza, Ijaz Chaudhry, and Umar Cheema.

Touching upon national security matters, Imran referred to revelations made during a National Security Committee (NSC) meeting, noting Asad Majeed's identification of a 'potential' threat.

He underscored the significance of reassessing Donald Lu's statement, suggesting that it could have implications warranting further investigation, particularly regarding the involvement of the US Embassy.

He questioned why Pakistan's alleged cypher breach wasn't subject to investigation, pointing out that the original cypher resides in the Foreign Office. He mentioned that they were provided with a summarized version.

Regarding security protocols, he emphasized that the PM isn't solely responsible for safeguarding the cypher, but rather it's a shared responsibility within the office.

Imran also expressed frustration over receiving three sentences in just five days, recalling a warning from a TV anchor about his expected conviction by February 5. He wished for his court hearings to be broadcast live.

Additionally, the PTI founder commented on remarks made by Rana Sanaullah, likening them to typical tactics used by 'political mafias'. He highlighted the need for fair political competition, particularly in Punjab, where he noted difficulties in meeting with the parliamentary leader.

ISLAMABAD:
The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Wednesday granted the PTI permission to hold a political rally in the federal capital on April 6.

Chief Justice Aamer Farooq presided over the hearing of PTI's plea against denial of permission by law enforcement agencies citing security concerns.

"One's right of assembly can not be taken away," said the judge as he directed the federal capital's administration to specify their conditions for permitting the rally.

PTI counsel Sher Afzal Marwat said that the party wanted to hold a public gathering on April 6, to which Justice Farooq said the party should ensure "there is no riot”.

The state counsel stated that PTI was not granted permission due to security concerns and that the party violated the rules earlier.

"There is no issue in setting conditions, which is normal, but no conditions should be imposed which are contrary to the standard TORs," said the IHC chief justice.

Omar Ayub poised to lead opposition in NA

No other contender threw hat in the ring within designated time frame, leaving stage unchallenged

April 01, 2024

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) stalwart Omar Ayub is set to take the helm as the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, sources revealed on Monday.

Reports indicate that until 6 pm, the National Assembly speaker's desk saw only one nomination request land. No other contender threw their hat in the ring within the designated time frame, leaving the stage unchallenged.

Sources further reveal that a decision on the matter is expected today at 11 am.

The nomination for Omar Ayub's opposition leadership was backed by 85 members of the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), marking a significant show of support.

Last month, in a formal move, the PTI-Sunni Ittehad Council alliance put forward Omar Ayub Khan's candidacy for the opposition leader position, submitting the necessary documents to National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq's office.

This development comes in the wake of approximately 90 Members of the National Assembly (MNAs) associated with PTI joining hands with the SIC post-general elections. These MNAs, initially contesting as independent candidates, united under the SIC banner in a bid to secure reserved seats.

The submission of nomination papers was orchestrated by Malik Amir Dogar, in the presence of SIC's leading figure Sahibzada Hamid Raza, along with MNAs Ali Mohammad Khan, Riaz Fatyana, Dr Nisar Ahmad Jatt, and other key personalities.

‘IK, Qureshi were not allowed to offer Eid prayers’

ISLAMABAD: “The jailed former prime minister Imran Khan and the ex-foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi were not allowed to offer Eid prayers.”

This was stated by the daughter of former foreign minister Qureshi, Meher Bano Qureshi, who said that both Khan and her father were not allowed to offer Eid prayers at Adiala jail.

Former president Dr Arif Alvi, in a series of posts on X, condemned the highhandedness of the jail authorities for not allowing the former prime minister and the foreign minister to offer Eid prayers.

He further said that another party member Ejaz Chaudhary wasn’t allowed to do so either but “he led the prayer with Omar Cheema in their cell.”

On April 9, Dr Arif Alvi posted that Imran Khan’s ban on Eid prayers reminded him of the British rule. He wrote about a famous leader in India’s freedom struggle when he was sentenced by the occupying authorities.

He remarked, “He [Indian leader] remained in prison for four years and during that time Eid prayers were not even allowed. Because these oppressive rulers wanted to destroy the leadership of Muslim India, one of the various tactics to weaken their patriotism was to ban Friday and Eid prayers as well.”

The Adiala jail could not be reached for comments despite several attempts at his cellphone for comments.
