The third round of talks between the government and the PTI to bring down political temperatures will take place on January 16 (Thursday).

A notice issued today from the National Assembly (NA) Secretariat said NA Speaker Ayaz Sadiq would preside over the session at 11:30am in Parliament House.

Since PTI founder Imran Khan’s incarceration last year in several cases, PTI’s relations with the government and the establishment have deteriorated sharply, marked by protests that frequently escalated into violence amid state repression.

Senate Chairman Gillani issues production order for Senator Ejaz Chaudhry

January 13, 2025

Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gillani on Monday issued a production order for PTI Senator Ejaz Chaudhry, who has been incarcerated for 18 months, so that he can attend the Senate session tomorrow.

This is not the first production order issued for the senator, who is imprisoned at Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat Jail. In March last year, he was due to be produced in the Senate, but was unable to attend the session.

In November, Chaudhry was among 21 other PTI figures formally indicted by a Lahore Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in cases related to the countrywide riots on May 9, 2023, registered at the Racecourse and Sarwar Road police stations.

Chaudhry said that despite being a member of the Senate, he was not allowed to attend sessions parliamentary sessions. “No hardship has been able to break us and nor will it. The state oppression will end,” he added.

According to the production order — a copy of which is available with Dawn.com — the request to produce Chaudhry was made by Opposition Leader in the Senate Shibli Faraz.

“The Honourable Chairman Senate considers necessary the presence of Senator Ejaz Ahmad Chaudhry during the sittings of the 345th session of the Senate of Pakistan,” the order read.

“The Honourable Chairman Senate has been pleased to summon Senator Ejaz Ahmad Chaudhary to attend the sittings of the said session at the Parliament House.”

The order, addressed to the secretary of the interior minister among others, directed them to “produce Senator Ejaz Ahmad Chaudhary at the commencement of each sitting of the said session”, stating that Chaudhry would be returned to their custody upon the conclusion of the sitting.

PTI, in its appeal to the Trump Administration, considering the Pakistani establishment is beholden to the US and unfortunately this is the pathway that has to go through because elections aren’t respected and sincere democracy can’t be done internally, needs to craft its message in terms Trump will resonate with.

And have the patience to not speak prematurely. The message has to be crafted carefully and in a 3-5 minutes max pitch.

For example in todays speech, after introducing I’m his daughter in law Laura Trump, whom the PTI have met, he used the phrase “TOO BIG TO RIG”

So PTI needs to catch these sound bites and build their “elevator pitch”. Working in IK won on Form 45 and the establishment tried to rig form 47 but the people know the establishment tried to rig.

Trump may also not favorably to generals and democratically elected leaders.

Trump also refers to the January 6 rioters as “hostages”, so he looks like we would be amiable to a narrative that the PTI supporters are political prisoners, especially how they were treated, and the narrative of outside agitators.

PTI can also talk about the character assassination (as well as the real assassination attempt) on IK, not unlike Comey, the domestic American intel chief (fbi chief), to go after Trump, not different from how the current Pak army chief is trying to characterize IK.

PTI MNA Junaid Akbar Khan was elected chairman of the National Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee on Friday, the NA Secretariat confirmed in a press release.

The PAC is among the most powerful parliamentary bodies, with the authority to summon virtually any individual or record from government departments in financial matters. The post has remained vacant since the General Elections in February, 2024.

Earlier, the PTI had nominated party firebrand Sher Afzal Marwat as a candidate for the PAC’s chairmanship, but later replaced his name with current party spokesperson Sheikh Waqas Akram.

On December 20, NA Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq gave the government and opposition one week to nominate candidates to fill the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) chairman’s post.

According to the NA Secretariat press release issued today, Akbar was “unanimously” elected chairman of the PAC.

PTI to boycott 4th round of talks with govt: Gohar

Irfan Sadozai
January 24, 2025

PTI has decided to boycott the fourth round of talks with the government, a day after it announced that party founder Imran Khan issued directions to call off negotiations due to a delay over the formation of judicial commissions.

The PTI and the government had been engaged in talks to bring down political temperatures. After two rounds of meetings, the third round was held seven days ago (Jan 16) in which the PTI formally presented its demands in writing.

Despite weeks of negotiations, the dialogue process has hardly moved forward on major issues — the formation of judicial commissions and the release of PTI prisoners.

On Monday, the government assured the PTI of a response to the opposition’s ‘charter of demands’ within seven working days after the party warned it would boycott the next round of talks if judicial commissions were not formed to probe the May 9 and November 26 incidents.

National Assembly speaker Ayaz Sadiq has called the meeting for the fourth round, scheduled to be held on Jan 28 at 11:45am, according to a notification issued by the NA secretariat, a copy of which is available with Dawn.com. The meeting will be presided over by Sadiq and an invitation has been extended to the PTI.

‘Peca amendment black law’: Shibli

Speaking during the presser, Senator Shibli Faraz commented on the recent amendments made to The Prevention of Electronic Crimes (Peca) Act, calling it a “black law against freedom of expression”.

The bill was passed in the National Assembly a day ago, following which journalists staged a walkout from the press gallery in protest of the bill’s passage.

Lawmakers from the opposition Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam Fazl also opposed the bill.

He said that the amendments were meant to push media representatives into the dark, adding that efforts were being made to suppress people’s voices.

“And then they (the government) complain about people not investing in Pakistan,” he remarked. “How can people invest in Pakistan when such laws are being passed?”

He further said that senators and MNAs were silent on the passage o of the amendment bills.

“They are enjoying their positions based on a fake mandate, that’s why they don’t care about the people.”

Meanwhile, Ayub also chimed in and said that “online businesses will be destroyed under this act.”

Govt asks PTI to reconsider

On the other hand, the government, on Thursday, urged the PTI to reconsider its decision of abandoning the dialogue process. Addressing a press conference outside Parliament House, Senator Irfan Siddiqui urged the PTI to not forsake dialogue, for the sake of political stability.

“I cannot understand the reason for the PTI’s threat to abandon talks,” he added. He said the two sides had already agreed to give the government time to furnish its formal written response to the PTI’s demands, adding that the deadline was not yet up.

“I don’t have the words except that they were in a hurry to arrive and are in a hurry to depart. The impatience with which they came is the same with which they are going back. We ask them to stay some days and not go back; let the weather become pleasant.”

Senator Siddiqui said the coalition parties had “almost” formed an opinion on the PTI’s demands. “They should reconsider if it is in their power and if they can form an opinion apart from their founder’s opinion,” he added.

The senator had pointed out that the government side had exhibited restraint on many points during the talks and ignored many actions by the PTI since it wanted to advance talks in the “spirit of negotiations, democracy and give and take”.

He had called on the PTI to reconsider its course of action or submit its complaints in written form.
