Now, to defend his wife's honour, he should have come without a uniform and brawled his way out.
Poor soul was poking his stick to intimidate. Couldn't fight physically, so resort to a gun. A child can fight with guns.

Imo Army officer cannot wear uniform for personal reason of issue. He can fire bullet to protect his wife or shoot for self for defense as it is his right but cannot wear official uniform for personal reason as simple as that.

he can jump in anytime to protect a civilian (including his wife), but he was not defending. He should have isolated his wife (if she was in danger) and then moved away from the crowd. Then he should have called the police.
