They are way ahead of us. It would take at least ten years for us to catch up, but I want to remind everyone that Germany used to be a leader and pioneer in wind turbine technology. I recall going on school trips to the factories. This was all before the Chinese stole (!) the technology, improved it, and forced the Germans out of the market with their aggressive pricing. Same happened in the solar energy industry and next is the automobile industry. China wouldn't be anywhere close to where it's now if the Germans weren't such idiots. This is, btw, common knowledge in Germany.

oh one hand yes, on another, Germany was never going to be able to compete with China on mass production of cheap solar panels.

The Germans shot themselves over the Russia conflict. The energy prices killed German manufacturing to a significant degree in several sectors, and its never coming back, especially with China's rise in producing the same things and even Turkey producing things, and much cheaper.
 
Energy production from natural gas and coal is down because dams and other hydroelectric power plants are currently generating high output of electricity. Very helpful in the context of the ongoing global energy crisis.

The Atatürk Dam, one of Turkey’s most critical energy and water projects, has seen its water level exceed 90%.

Thanks to the effects of snow and spring rains, it has reached one of the highest levels recorded in the last 20–30 years.
