The Nissan X-Trail is the most popular SUV in the Russian capital. According to the agency, on 1 January 2024, there were 59,500 such crossovers in Moscow. The second place belongs to another Japanese crossover, the Nissan Qashqai, with 56,900 vehicles registered. The TOP-5 also included the Volkswagen Tiguan (54.3 thousand vehicles), the Toyota RAV4 (52.3 thousand vehicles) and the Mitsubishi Outlander (45.7 thousand vehicles). The Volkswagen Tiguan crossover is the leader in the SUV park of the Northern Capital, with 27,100 vehicles registered. The Mitsubishi Outlander is on the second place, with 25.5 thousand vehicles.
In contrast to Moscow, the third and fourth places in St. Petersburg are occupied by the Renault Duster (25.3 thousand vehicles) and the Hyundai Creta (22.7 thousand vehicles) respectively. The Nissan Qashqai (20.5 thousand vehicles) is on the fifth place. It is also worth noting that the LADA 4x4 SUV is currently ranked eighth in the SUV segment in St. Petersburg and tenth in Moscow.

Avtodom’s plant in Moscow region to commence production of vehicles under Maxeed brand​

The former Mercedes-Benz plant in Yesipovo near Moscow, which in April 2023 was transferred to the Russian group Avtodom with the right to buy back, will commence production of vehicles under its own Maxeed brand. This information was given to RBK by sources involved in the project. According to them, the production volume is planned to be 120,000 vehicles per year. The models with an internal combustion engine will be the first produced at the enterprise in Moscow region, later hybrids and electric cars will be added to the line.
Andrey Olkhovsky, co-owner of Avtodom, previously informed RBK of the intention to commence production of vehicles under his own brand. He stated that the company will initially produce a single brand, but the range may be expanded in line with sales volume, the enterprise's capacities and industrial partners of the project. By the end of 2025, up to eight models are planned for launch on the market. Following this, the enterprise in Moscow region is set to triple its capacity (currently 30,000 vehicles per year).
As A. Olkhovsky stated, the plant has already been restarted and is currently engaged in test vehicle assembly. Mr. Olkhovsky did not provide a timeline for the start of serial production at the plant, but expressed confidence that it will begin before the end of this year. The company must also determine the pool of future dealers, sign contracts with them, and bring the sales centers up to the new brand standards.
At the same time, the partners of Avtodom in this project have not yet been officially announced. However, it was revealed that dealers received the EXEED VX crossovers, assembled at the former Mercedes-Benz plant in Moscow region. At the SPIEF-2024 exhibition, AVTOVAZ unveiled a pre-production modification of the LADA Vesta with manual steering. The system allows people with impaired function of one or both legs to drive the car comfortably and safely, AVTOVAZ press service reports. It is planned to produce the LADA Vesta with manual steering in sedan and estate versions. The start of production is planned for the end of 2024, prices and configurations will be announced later. The car is based on the LADA Vesta with a continuously variable automatic transmission.
At the same time, the presented vehicle combines AT with a 106 hp 1.6-litre engine. This economical and efficient engine is currently being prepared for production. The manually-steering car is equipped with a special lever to the left of the steering wheel. The lever is mechanically linked to the pedals, allowing the driver to control the vehicle's acceleration and braking with a single lever. Moving the lever backwards activates the accelerator, while moving it forward activates the brakes. This control system is the most ergonomic and also enables the car to be driven in the usual way, using the pedals. A similar system is already standard in the LADA Granta cars with manual steering.
As previously reported by AUTOSTAT, an autopilot system has been developed in Russia for the LADA Vesta. NAMI has therefore presented the NAMI Self-Driving System, a system of unmanned transport capable of automating the movement of any passenger car, truck or robotic vehicle.

This revealed that the share of legal entities in the market decreased from 23% (in May 2023) to 16% (in May 2024). Meanwhile, in April, this indicator was equal to 18%. Accordingly, the market share of individuals in May increased to 84%. In April it was 82%, and a year ago (in May 2023) it was 77%. As for the structure of the market by body type, the station wagon continues to lead. It accounts for 64-66% of all passenger car sales.
The share of sedans increased from 18% (in May 2023) to 22% (in May 2024). Conversely, the figure for hatchbacks decreased from 13% to 10%. The market structure by fuel type has also changed. The share of petrol cars increased slightly over the year, from 93.1% to 95.4%. Concurrently, the share of diesel cars declined almost fourfold, from 3.9% in May 2023 to the current 1%. This is attributed to the decline in car sales in the traditional premium segment, which are mostly powered by diesel. In contrast, Chinese premium vehicles are equipped with petrol engines. Furthermore, the share of hybrids and electric cars also decreased in May, particularly when compared to the April figures.
Consequently, the share of hybrids declined from 4.4% to 2.7% over the month, while the share of electric cars reduced from 1.6% to 0.9%. This may be attributed to a change in the procedure for car recycling tax collecting, which was planned to be implemented as of 1 April. As a result, some consumers attempted to purchase cars before this date but a number of vehicles were registered already in April.

AVTOVAZ plans to produce approximately 3,000 LADA Aura cars in 2024. The start of serial production of the new model is scheduled for the third quarter of this year. Maxim Sokolov, AVTOVAZ president, informed TASS agency that the LADA Aura will be produced on the same assembly line as the LADA Vesta, with a production rate of approximately five cars per hour. He further stated that the new premium sedan will be delivered to government agencies by the end of the year.

The first units of long wheelbase sedans are currently being assembled at the Togliatti plant for AVTOVAZ internal tests. The new LADA Aura large sedan is based on the Vesta model. The Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) announced an investment of 2 billion rubles in the production of Russian electric car Atom. The project is being implemented by Kama company in collaboration with major technology leaders, including KAMAZ. According to RDIF press service, the project unites more than 1,000 specialists with experience in major Russian and international companies. The Atom electric car is being developed on the first fully domestic platform for electric cars with technological support from leading players in the domestic automotive and IT industries. All key technological solutions and elements are being developed and will be manufactured in Russia.
The Atom is equipped with a number of technologies used in the premium segment, including an augmented reality display with projection on the windscreen, remote access and start of the electric car from the phone, automatic parking, and an advanced driver assistance system (ADAS). At the development stage, the Atom has already attracted significant interest from individuals and businesses, including taxi parks, car-sharing and delivery services. Over 105,000 pre-orders have already been received for the electric car.
“The Atom project is being implemented using a range of engineering, software and technological innovations, and taking into account the characteristics of the best models on the market. One of the key advantages of the project is the high level of localization of major components, which creates a synergistic effect with other companies and industries, stimulates the development of the necessary charging and service infrastructure,” said Kirill Dmitriev, CEO of Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF). 1,288 new buses were sold in Russia in May 2024, which is 12% less than in May 2023 (1,455 vehicles). During the month the market declined by 40% (2,143 vehicles in April). This information was provided by the experts of AUTOSTAT agency, based on PPK* data and their own segmentation. 45% of the total bus sales came from domestic PAZ. Consequently, the new PAZ sales came up to 585 vehicles in May. Chinese Yutong and Russian LIAZ are far behind the leader (198 and 165 units, respectively).
The total sales of other bus brands were less than 100 units. In the model rating, three market players sold over a hundred vehicles. The PAZ 3204 bus continues to lead the market with 320 vehicles sold in May. The PAZ 3205 (169 vehicles) and the LIAZ 5292 (147 vehicles) are also in the TOP-3. During the first five months of this year, sales of new buses in the Russian Federation totaled 8,555 vehicles, representing a 23% increase compared to January - May 2023.

According to experts of AUTOSTAT agency, who cited data from PPK company* and their own segmentation, 127,200 new passenger cars were sold in Russia in May 2024. At the same time, there is an interesting situation on the market: despite a year-on-year increase in sales, monthly volumes are down compared to the previous month. Consequently, sales in May were 76% higher than in May in 2023, but lower than in April (-7%).
This is the second consecutive month of decline. April sales declined by 6.5% compared to March. We should remind that in March, passenger car sales reached the maximum monthly figure (146.5 thousand vehicles) since May 2021. The market leader in May was domestic LADA with 40,100 vehicles sold, representing a market share of over 31%. Over 10,000 vehicles were sold by three Chinese brands - Haval (14,000 vehicles), Chery (13,000 vehicles) and Geely (10,300 vehicles). These four brands collectively accounted for approximately 61% of the total market.
The LADA Granta continues to lead the market with 18,500 cars sold in May. The next popular model is the LADA Vesta, with sales of 13,600 vehicles sold. The Haval Jolion crossover retains the title of the
best-selling foreign car in our country, with 6,600 vehicles. In May, the Chery Tiggo 7 PRO Max crossover (5,100 vehicles) also sold over 5,000 vehicles.

This May, 9,444 new trucks were sold in our country, representing a 16.5% decrease compared to the same month in 2023. These statistics are based on PPK data with the segmentation of AUTOSTAT agency. Experts are observing a decline in truck sales in Russia for the second consecutive month, with further
intensification of this trend in May. We should remind, that in April, the market volume decreased by 6% compared to April 2023. This trend is evident not only in annual comparisons but also on a monthly basis.
In comparison to the previous month, May sales volumes were 15% lower than in April. For the second consecutive month, domestic KAMAZ has been the market leader in this segment, accounting for 18.5% of
the total volume in May, which equates to 1,749 vehicles sold. The second place is taken by Chinese SITRAK with 1,260 vehicles sold. The TOP-5 of the new truck market also includes three more Chinese brands: Shacman (1,105 vehicles), FAW (991 vehicles) and Dongfeng (710 vehicles). Despite this fact, the SITRAK C7H continues to lead the market with 13.3% of total truck sales in May.
Over the first five months of the year, the new truck sales in Russia totaled 49,800 vehicles. This represents a slight decrease of 0.3% compared to the same period last year.

The second place in the rating of SUVs and crossovers was taken by the Chery Tiggo 7 PRO Max, with 5,084 vehicles sold (+63.3%). The Chery Tiggo 4 PRO was the third with 4,256 vehicles sold (2.2-fold increase). It is followed by the LADA Niva Travel, which found 4,203 owners (+30.9%). The LADA Niva Legend took the fifth place this time with 3,676 vehicles sold (+37%).

In May, 7,611 new light commercial vehicles (LCVs) were sold in Russia, representing a 12% increase compared to May 2023. These statistics are based on PPK data with the segmentation of AUTOSTAT agency. Thus, some pickup models are classified as passenger cars, not LCVs. According to the agency's experts if the LCV market continues to grow on an annual basis since April 2023, in comparison to the previous month, it decreased.
Consequently, the May result for this market segment was 19% lower than the April figure. Domestic GAZ continues to lead the LCV market in Russia. In May, the brand held a 53.6% market share, representing 4,082 vehicles sold. The next three positions in the rating are also held by Russian brands - UAZ (1,404 vehicles), Sollers (745 vehicles) and LADA (617 vehicles). The fifth place was taken by Chinese Dongfeng,
which sold 171 vehicles. We should also mention, that the GAZ Gazelle NEXT remains the leader of the model ranking of the new LCV market, accounting for 30.6% in May.
Over the first five months of this year, 40,000 units of light commercial vehicles were sold in our country.

The Sollers Argo is now available with a petrol engine​

Sollers company started sales of the Sollers Argo light truck with a petrol engine. According to the automaker's press service, the new version of the vehicle is now more affordable, with special offers reducing the cost of the petrol version of the Sollers Argo with a steel flatbed body to 1.659 million rubles. We should remind that the previous model was only available with a 130 hp 2-litre diesel engine in combination with a 6-speed manual transmission.
The petrol engine, which is installed in the Sollers Argo, has a volume of 2.0 litres, meets Euro-5 standards and is designed to work on at least AI-92 petrol. The vehicle produces 136 hp and maximum torque of 196 Nm. The new engine is coupled with a 5-speed gearbox. The base equipment of the petrol Sollers Argo includes air conditioning, cruise control, steering column adjustment, audio system, power windows and large side mirrors with electric drive and heating.
The new version of the vehicle is available with a standard length of wheelbase and a range of superstructures including flatbed, industrial and isothermal bodies with a volume of up to 12 cubic meters. As previously reported by AUTOSTAT in September 2023, the new Sollers Cargo enterprise started CKD production of the Sollers Argo compact trucks. The planned production capacity for this model is more than 10,000 vehicles per year over the five-year period.
