As of July 1, 2024, 1.86 million passenger cars of Chinese brands were registered in Russia, which is 4% of the total number. This was found out by experts of "AUTOSTAT" agency in the course of work on the updated report "Vehicle fleet in the Russian Federation as of 01.07.2024". Azat Timerkhanov, head of the press service of AUTOSTAT agency, notes that in the next two years, "Chinese" cars will be able to overtake the cars of French and American brands in terms of fleet volume. "Currently, the share of "French" and "Americans" in the Russian fleet is about 6% and 7%, respectively. Obviously, if the current market situation persists, Chinese brands will overtake them in a couple of years and enter the top 5. Only Russian, Japanese, Korean and German brands will be higher," summarizes the expert.

The most widespread of Chinese automobile brands in Russia is Chery with 444.7 thousand vehicles. The second place in the brand rating is occupied by Geely (341.1 thousand vehicles), the third - by Haval (296 thousand vehicles). These three leaders account for about 60% of the total number of passenger cars "Chinese" in the country. We should also note that more than half of all Russian "Chinese" (52%) are registered in 10 subjects of Russian Federation. At the same time, almost a quarter (24%) belonged to Moscow and Moscow Region. Thus, Moscow tops the regional rating - there are 294 thousand cars of Chinese brands in the capital.

Moscow Region is in the second place with 157.2 thousand cars. The barrier of 100 thousand "Chinese" is also overcome by St. Petersburg (102.9 thousand cars). Among non-metropolitan regions, Krasnodar Krai is the leader (89.1 thousand cars), which ranks fourth in the overall standings. Besides them, the top 10 includes Tatarstan (61.1 thousand vehicles), Sverdlovsk region (55.3 thousand vehicles), Rostov region (53.4 thousand vehicles), Bashkortostan (53.3 thousand vehicles), Chelyabinsk region (49 thousand vehicles) and Nizhny Novgorod region (45.7 thousand vehicles).

Izvestia newspaper has found out that some pickup truck owners have been charged excessive fee for at least half a year. Now, if such a car is classified as a truck, it will have to pay 100 thousand Rubles, while if it is a passenger car - 1.6 million Rubles. But because of the recommendations of Rosstandart only for one model - RAM 1500 TRX - owners of such cars can claim for recalculation and return more than 1 billion rubles from the budget, as calculated in the National Automobile Union (NAU).

As follows from the letter of Rosstandart, the department is aware of the situation: in spring, they instructed testing laboratories to check how pickup trucks were classified. At the end of the first half of 2024, 12,260 new pickup trucks were sold in Russia, which is 85% more in compare with the same period last year. This is reported by experts of "AUTOSTAT" agency with reference to the data of JSC "PIC"* and its own segmentation. As noted, since March 2024 more than 2 thousand new pickup trucks are sold every month in the country.
