Russia earnings on oil, gas, gold, diamonds, etc are gigantic. he doesn’t need money. Basically nobody in Russia needs to work they have plenty of money from selling natural resources.
Lands? Russia landmass is more than the US and China combined.
NATO? Ukraine is not in the NATO. That will not happen in 30y because of Germany and France veto. By then Putin is long dead.
The only reason why Putin starts the war because he is divorced, nothing to do with his life. He dreams of glory Russia. But Russia remains a cheap gas station. he turns Russia into a Chinese colony. Ukraine turning to the west making him extremely angry. Putin is much like an angry drunken aggressive husband, seeing his wife Ukraine running away to another man.

If Putin waits long enough, Ukraine could be in NATO by 2025.
Ukraine made it constitutional to join NATO sometimes in 2019.
So it make sense from a political viewpoint that you make your move (invasion) as soon as possible (2022).
