Putin runs into the same hole like USSR did. today it’s even worse. Russia economy is just a fraction to US economy. While Putin rules Russia like a cheap gas station, USSR under Breshnew had a much more diverse economy.
If Trump means serious with sanctions and military buildup he can bankrupt Russia much easily.

Quality of life is much better for Russians today compared to the Soviet era. Today Russians can buy whatever they want from China. Smartphones, tablets, cars, laptops, whatever they want. Comparison with Soviet era is apples and oranges.
