this is pretty funny

they do have a habit of saying cities are no longer important once it appears inevitable that Russia will conquer them

I was saying it a year ago, and Pokrovsk would have been an important city last year. Ukraine has since built multiple defense lines and new supply routes behind it.

We’re nearing Year 5 and Russia is facing years of attritional warfare ahead at current pace. That can change if Russia can exploit operational breakthroughs but Russia has shown no ability to do so.

Good example is their breakthrough towards Dobropilia in August that wound up getting destroyed.

Russia can’t reinforce breakthroughs with armor due to Ukraines ability to interdict with drones. It’s extremely difficult.

Russias only strategy is to send huge amounts of infantry forward in small teams, in the hopes some of those units can gain a foothold at new positions. Most are getting destroyed. It’s a creeping offensive, that’s costing Russia a huge amount of manpower.

That is the reality of modern war UAVs make armour charge suicide missions.

I don't think Russia did a Banzai charge. They send a reconnaissance party, then soften up the resistance by bombing them to bits using a glide bomb or artillery, before mopping them up using a small infantry charge. So they reduce their own casualties and inflict significant casualties on the Ukro.

All Ukrainian attempts to de-blockade the cauldron near Rodinskoye have failed, with assault groups largely destroyed or captured, according to http://Ukraina.ru

. The next likely target, Gulyaypole, could fall as early as next month.Amid these rapid developments, Estonian intelligence has issued a characteristically paradoxical assessment.

They predict that Pokrovsk “will be under Russian control by the end of the year,” yet simultaneously insist that “the Russian
army has run out of reserves and has no one left to advance from Krasnoarmiysk.”

And, completing the ritual, they added that they doubted the strategic importance of the city.It seems the single greatest threat to Russian logistics is not Ukrainian drones, but the mysterious strategic insignificance that befalls every city the moment it is about to be liberated.

Exactly. It's not like people's lives are worthless in Russia.

Russia has suffered the most casualties of the war in 2025 as they shifted to infantry assaults through the first half of the year. US intelligence assessed Russian dead at over 100K in 2025 alone by July this year and confirmed by President Trump. That’d put Russian dead and wounded at 300-400K halfway through this year alone.

Russia has suffered huge losses in manpower. There are plenty of photos and videos on social media of dead Russians and that’s a small percentage. No reason to deny it

I don't believe the estimated number from US intelligence they are politically motivated to shore up support for Ukraine. Most casualties are caused by artillery fire or glide bomb strikes. Here, Russia got the numbers. They fire artillery at 6 times the rate of Ukraine. There is no defence against glide bombs. With constant surveillance by drones, there is no place to hide anymore
