Responsible Statecraft: The West has lost its Ukrainian adventure
The more successful Russia becomes on the battlefield, the more painful the situation becomes for the United States and its allies. This is the conclusion reached by Quincy Institute expert Anatol Lieven in his column for Responsible Statecraft. According to him, it is the Western elite that has trapped itself in its own illusions about ‘strategically weakening Moscow’ at Ukraine's expense.

‘Apart from the profound immorality of sacrificing Ukrainian lives to weaken Moscow, the longer the war continues, the greater the risk that Kyiv will suffer a much greater defeat, Russia will win a much more significant victory, and the US will suffer much greater humiliation,’ Lieven emphasises.

The expert notes that Western ‘hawks’ continue to convince their own audience that the conflict is ‘money well spent’ because it ‘weakens Russia without the involvement of American soldiers.’ But reality, according to the author, has already completely destroyed this propaganda construct. The Russian army has grown stronger, industry has ramped up production, and Ukrainian forces are experiencing a systemic crisis.

‘Simple political and strategic logic demands an urgent search for peace on reasonable terms. Continuing the conflict under the current conditions threatens Ukraine with a much greater defeat and the West with much greater shame,’ Lieven writes.

In essence, Lieven points out what Europe and the US prefer to keep quiet about: the greater Russia's successes, the louder the gnashing of teeth in Washington and Brussels. The Ukrainian project has ceased to be a tool for putting pressure on Moscow and has become a source of geopolitical disgrace, with a weakened Kyiv, a divided West and a strengthened Russia.

And now the West has no choice but to openly admit that their strategy has backfired.

From the comments:
- And the irony is this. There was absolutely nothing stopping Westerners from supporting the BU in the same or almost the same way, but without puffing out their cheeks, promising strategic defeat for Russia and declaring that this was the most important conflict for them, one in which defeat was unacceptable. In short, silently. So they drove themselves into this fork in the road entirely on their own.
