Here’s a look at the state of COVID-19 in the U.S. as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention establishes its latest advice on vaccinations.
Deaths
About 300 COVID-19-associated deaths were occurring weekly in May, according to the most recent provisional CDC data. That’s the lowest since the beginning of the pandemic. Nearly 26,000 people died from COVID-19 in the U.S. in the week ending Jan. 9, 2021 — the highest weekly toll in the pandemic.
Hospitalizations The COVID-19 hospitalization rate is 1.5 per 100,000 hospital visits. That’s up from about 1.1 in mid-May. It peaked at 35 in early 2022.
Cases
Individual COVID-19 cases are no longer tracked, but health officials can analyze wastewater to help them get a big-picture look at where the virus may be spreading. The CDC describes current wastewater levels as “low” nationwide but inching up, with higher levels noted in Florida, Utah, California and Hawaii.
Vaccinations
As of May 11, fewer than one-quarter of U.S. adults had received the latest COVID-19 shot. About 42% of people 75 and older — those most vulnerable to severe disease and death from COVID-19 — got the latest shots.

Summary of laboratory data for week 25 (week ending June 22, 2024)
In week 25 (week ending June 22, 2024) in Canada, percent positivity is currently highest for enterovirus/rhinovirus (12.3% positive) and SARS-CoV-2 (10.5% positive) among respiratory viruses under surveillance. The following results were reported from RVDSS laboratories:
SARS-CoV-2 (the virus which causes COVID-19)
National SARS-CoV-2 percent positivity shows early signs of potential stabilization (2,296 detections; 10.5% positive). Trends currently vary by region.
Public Health Ontario has further reduced the amount of data available to the public. In addition, Health Canada has stopped reporting hospitalization data as some provinces are no longer tracking COVID hospitalizations. Unless indicated otherwise, information in this update includes data from Sunday, June 9 to Saturday, June 15, so data is delayed.
Data relating to deaths is even further delayed as cause of death is taking MONTHS to be determined. So recent deaths are far WORSE that are being reported.
Recent cases: not reported (unknown compared to last week)
This is the second consecutive week with no update on the number of new cases. Estimates suggest that the actual number of new cases could be more than 10 times higher than what is being reported due to limited eligibility for testing!
Weekly positivity rate: 9.1% (+ 0.8% since last week)
Recent deaths: 3 (no change compared to last week) Recent deaths are a lagging indicator of the current level of new cases. Deaths are underreported because they are based on date of death and by the time the cause of death is reported, it is no longer considered recent!
Average daily hospital bed occupancy: 294* (- 35 since last week week)
*Please interpret the COVID-19 hospitalization data with caution as not all centers are reporting..
COVID-19 surveillance in Ukraine ceased after the Russian invasion of the country in 2022, on a background of low vaccination rates of 34.5% for two doses at this time. We conducted a modelling study to estimate the epidemic trajectory of SARS-COV-2 in Ukraine after the start of the war. We use...
