Last night, something rather extraordinary happened, and it shook me.

One gentleman (who is considered very balanced and very educated gentleman!) was assuring Americans that the cost of this adventure was so insignificant that it might amount to little more than petty cash.

OTOH, Americans were saying that the daily cost already appears so substantial that their ordinary cash flow scarcely seems sufficient to sustain it, and, that they now fear the expense may rise at an alarming pace.

It seems to me that our people are so thoroughly incapable of understanding the obvious that they cannot understand this simple point: no matter petty the cost of an adventure may appear, it has no legitimacy whatsoever if those paying the bills say that their cash flow can no longer bear the expense and going beyond this could only result in survival through mismatch of timing between daily expenses vs monthly income.
Someone may say, “Surely, what difference can it make?”. The cost may be mere pennies to America, yet if even that a meagre sum becomes disproportionate at the level of the family unit, the entire legitimacy of such adventurism begins to evaporate.

Put simply: if the billion dollars spent as a matter of routine produces no meaningful utility for the household, then its economic justification is reduced to precisely nothing.

I was shocked to know that gentleman in question (or the elite or ruling class of our country!) are so sanitized towards this idea that, it is not the cost that matters (even it is a smallest unit of cost!), it is the cohesion at the atomic level of the state that gives legitimacy to the interest of any 'nation'!
