Three security personnel killed in attack in Pakistan’s Karachi

Police say four attackers were also killed after gunmen stormed a Rangers facility in country’s commercial capital.

At least three paramilitary soldiers have been killed after a group of heavily armed attackers stormed a security compound in the city of Karachi, Pakistani police said.

Sindh Inspector General Javed Alam Odho said four attackers were also killed in the assault on the Rangers headquarters in Gulistan-i-Jauhar on Saturday evening.

A group of about five armed men stormed a compound belonging to the paramilitary Rangers force in the eastern district of Karachi soon after a suspected bomber rammed an explosive-laden vehicle into the entrance of the building, leading to a huge explosion, sources told Al Jazeera.

Odho told local media that, according to initial information, the attackers rammed a vehicle into the main gate of the facility. He said officials had not yet confirmed whether an explosion had taken place.

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah said in a statement that he had “taken notice of the reported sound of an explosion and the alleged firing” and ordered officials to submit a detailed report.

Security forces sealed off streets around the Mosamiat Chowrangi area as gunfire rang out.

A clearance operation was under way, with Special Security Unit commandos, the Anti-Terrorist Force and Rangers personnel deployed around the site.

The Edhi Foundation, which provides emergency assistance across Pakistan, said at least two people were wounded and taken to hospital.

An affiliate of Jamaat-ul-Ahrar – a splinter armed group of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), also known as the Pakistani Taliban – claimed responsibility for the attack late on Saturday.

According to the group’s claim, nine attackers took part in the assault on the compound.

The Pakistani Taliban is a separate group from the Taliban in Afghanistan, which seized power there in 2021.

The attack comes as Pakistan continues to face armed violence targeting security forces in several parts of the country.

An attack on the local headquarters of the Sindh Rangers in Karachi’s Gulistan-i-Jauhar locality on Saturday left three paramilitary personnel martyred and three terrorists dead, the province’s police chief said.

Speaking to Dawn, Sindh Inspector General Javed Alam Odho said that it had not initially been confirmed whether a blast had also taken place, adding that the terrorists had rammed the main gate with their vehicle.

You can call out presence of terrorists within that community just as there were RAW agents within MQM in the 90s.
That doesnt make the entire community bad - only highlights the issue of ethnic chasms and tribal loyalties.

If Farooq Sattar can make one phone call and get an Indian visa issued within 8 hours then yes there can also be Afghans sheltering terrorists and giving them loyalty versus your state.

Yeah agree, but you see MQM was at its peak still a Political part and Gang, like the Cartel's of Mexico, now you may argue they can be pretty violent and dangerous, but we are not at the same level as TTP/AQ and ISIS. If you say MQM to an American he won't blink twice, but when you say AQ/ISIS/Taliban you will see some eye brows raise up. I don't mind having Gangs in Pakistan, because they are not international Terrorists groups that will one day put a Van in some western Country full of explosive. We caught one of the 9/11 prep guy from Karachi, and if we don't control the Tribals/Afghan areas we will have another catastrophe not just in Pakistan but outside of Pakistan., Pakistan's name is already dragging in mud, we can't afford to be the epicenter of World's terrorism that we were once, Every major Terror Attack finds its roots in Wazirstan, that's speaks volume don't you think?
