Stupid & Funny from Around the World

The only time Denmark sold land to the United States was in 1917, when Denmark transferred control of its Caribbean colony, the Danish West Indies, to the United States for $25 million in gold.

Those islands were officially renamed the United States Virgin Islands and include Saint Thomas, Saint John, Saint Croix, and around 50 smaller islands and islets.

One of the smaller islands in this group was Little Saint James. It did not have a separate sale — it became part of U.S. territory as part of the larger 1917 deal.

Decades later, Jeffrey Epstein bought Little Saint James privately in 1998. Because of his crimes and how the island was used, it became widely known as “Epstein Island.”
