Top US officials in Damascus to meet new Syrian rulers, State Department says

Reuters

WASHINGTON: Top diplomats from the Biden administration are in Damascus on Friday to meet new Syrian authorities led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), a State Department spokesperson said, the first in-person and official meeting between Washington and Syria’s de-facto new rulers.

The State Department’s top Middle East diplomat Barbara Leaf, Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs Roger Carstens and newly appointed Senior Advisor Daniel Rubinstein, who is now tasked with leading the Department’s Syria engagement, are the first US diplomats to travel to Damascus since Syria’s opposition militias overthrew oppressive President Bashar al-Assad.

The visit comes as Western governments are gradually opening channels to HTS and its leader Ahmed al-Sharaa, and start debating whether or not to remove the terrorist designation on the group.

The US delegation’s travel follows contacts with France and Britain in recent days. In their meetings, the US officials will discuss with HTS representatives a set of principles such as inclusivity and respect for the rights of minorities that Washington wants included in Syria’s political transition, the spokesperson said.

The delegation will also work to obtain new information about US journalist Austin Tice, who was taken captive during a reporting trip to Syria in August 2012, and other American citizens who went missing during the Assad regime.

The United States cut diplomatic ties with Syria and shut down its embassy in Damascus in 2012.

In a seismic moment for the Middle East, Syrian rebels seized control of Damascus on Dec. 8, forcing Assad to flee after more than 13 years of civil war, ending his family’s decades-long rule.

The lightning offensive raised questions over whether the rebels will be able to ensure an orderly transition.

Forces under the command of al-Sharaa - better known as Abu Mohammed al-Golani - replaced the Assad family rule with a three-month transitional government that had been ruling a rebel enclave in Syria’s northwestern province of Idlib.

Washington in 2013 designated al-Sharaa a terrorist, saying al Qaeda in Iraq had tasked him with overthrowing Assad’s rule and establishing Islamic sharia law in Syria.

It said the Nusra Front, the predecessor of HTS, carried out suicide attacks that killed civilians and espoused a violent sectarian vision.

Turkiye will support Syria’s reconstruction, improve cooperation

Reuters

ANKARA: Turkiye will do whatever necessary for the reconstruction of Syria following the ouster of Bashar al-Assad, including improving ties in trade, energy and defence, President Tayyip Erdogan said.

“We will intensify our trade relations with Syria and Iraq. This will bring new dynamism for both Syria and Turkiye in every respect,” Erdogan said, according to a transcript of remarks he made to journalists on his return flight from Egypt.

“We will collaborate in many areas, from defence to education and energy. Syria currently faces serious energy issues. But we will swiftly address all of these problems.”

@_Arabia_ - So - does it still seem like the occupation of Syria by Israel will be temporary and objective based to you as you have suggested before ?

Trump more likely than not will give Israel full operational control over Syria.Any rebel group which doesn’t obey Israel will be swept away.Do they realize that the supposedly qatar surface gas pipeline is much easier to blow up than NORDSTREAM? They will have to get on Israel good side lol

First of all I never claimed or wrote that Israel could be trusted or that they would not intend to stay for longer than they initially claimed. So why are you addressing me? All I wrote earlier was what they themselves claimed regarding that small “buffer zone” and in relation to that I wrote that Israel could not be trusted and that time would tell what will happen. Nothing more or nothing less.

Besides is this news from that Shia Lebanese/Hezbollah/Iranian regime/Axis of failure supporter who has made a habit of spreading nonsense about Syria, even accurate to begin with? I am on my phone so not yet read any Syrian or Israeli media today.

Its a non-starter as Houthis/Iraqi resistance can cripple the pipeline with drone strikes.

A Russian website's prediction about future of free Syria
View attachment 89718

No wonder they published this after nuclear powers meeting behind closed doors.

If that’s how the division of Syria is going to be then the Turkish and Saudi areas will be under Islamic rule. The areas under Russia, Israel and US will be under Judeo-Christian Zionist control since all those countries are partners against Islam.

As predicted by the prophecies, the Great War, Malhama al Kubra, will be between Muslims and the Romans at a location just north of Aleppo. All the parties have arrived in the battlefield, with the Romans being represented by the Russians and Americans.

Nature of this conflict keeps metastasizing.
It is/was between colonized and the colonizer...
The colonizer wanted a minority in power the keep the majority in check, change and engineer their values and subjugate them... keep them bowed under the banner of Arab nationalism. With fair bit of innuendo to keep the minorities in-line by telling them ... don't let us fall for if and when we do you will suffer!
It makes monsters out of minorities... creeps fear and a sanctuary mindset. All the rest keep watching over their shoulders.
There is now an attempt to wrest that control back... by appropriating the regime. In comes the sectarian and ethno-nationalists to foment new trouble. They were the ones who used these fissures in the first place to create an insurrection. Assad had to go but being pawns or proxies of both sectarian parties is the crux of the problem. Besides Arab nationalism didn't just die it still holds a niche... which is evident in posts of certain posters here and elsewhere. Zion created a buffer zone of a buffer zone... which not only the original Golan was but the new one under the same rubric. Same old, same old!
Russians on the ground have very limited options... their eggs were in one basket, that was cooked. They also placated zion and helped achieve this outcome by only shielding themselves and allowing zion to destroy the rest of Syrian critical infrastructure... only furthered by US sanctions. It was achieved by all participants!
European far right only seeks to repatriate Syrians... a forever mission to keep the gene pool, well white!
The quick draw though and Assad leaving was not the goal... it was bloodbath. For them who got caught with their pants down on this outcome may seek to resurrect just that outcome.
Syria though remains the only path to Quds! And dismantling of zion...

Use your Logic.

Turkey is an extension of NATO, USA's military arm. How can you even suppose that they represent army of Islam?

Russians have never been a part of Roman empire. The term Rome points to an strong force that could be stronger than anyone else. Not other than USA and its regional dogs including Israel.
