It looks like Mazloum Abdi is ready to stand down..

Mazlum Abdi's statement on border security, Kobani and Roj Peshmerga

Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) Commander-in-Chief Mazlum Abdi stated that they are ready to hand over border security to the new Syrian administration, and said that urgent work must be carried out for dialogue and reconstruction in Syria.

The Commander-in-Chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), Mazloum Abdi , told the London-based Arabic-language media outlet Asharq Al-Awsat that they coordinated military operations with Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, led by Ahmed al-Sharaa, on the second day of clashes with the Assad regime, despite having no prior agreement.

Noting that the SDF is ready to join the new Syrian army, but that an agreement on the appropriate method must be reached, Mazlum Abdi pointed out the importance of Syria as an integrated country and said, "How the political system will be shaped is left to the will of the Syrian people and the constitutional negotiations."

Mazlum Abdi warned that a disaster could occur in Kobani if Turkey's attacks continue, after Turkey did not respond despite the SDF offering to Ankara to disarm the region through mediators.

The full text of the interview conducted by Sharq Al-Awsat with SDF Leader Mazlum Abdi is as follows:

* Did you have any information about the movements of Syrian opposition groups before December 27, 2024? Did you expect the Assad regime to be overthrown within ten days?

- There was information that Syrian opposition groups would launch a military operation against the former Syrian regime, and this was expected. However, what was not expected was the rapid collapse of the Syrian army, its lack of resistance and its abandonment by its allies who supported it throughout the Syrian revolution. I believe that what happened during this process and what happened behind the scenes will be revealed in the future.

* Was there any coordination or communication with HTS during the ten-day clashes?

- There was no coordination before the start of HTS's Operation to Deter Aggression. However, on the second day of the operation, there was field coordination between us to prevent clashes between our forces in some neighborhoods of Aleppo and also to evacuate displaced people from camps in the Tel Rifaat area, which was attacked by Turkish-backed groups, and this field coordination is still ongoing.

* How do you see the future of Syria after the overthrow of the Bashar al-Assad regime? Are you involved in negotiations with HTS on the form of the state and its political system?

- We have not yet had direct negotiations with HTS. However, we believe that Syria should be a decentralized, pluralistic and democratic state, where the country's distinct identity is constitutionally protected and the rights of all components of the Syrian people, including the Kurdish people, are protected.

We do not want Syria to be divided. We are ready to play our part in forming and participating in the government that will govern the country. Too much blood has been shed in Syria. Today, we urgently call for a full and direct dialogue to achieve a period of peace and security so that Syria can move forward and rebuild.

* Is a federal or confederal Syria what the Kurds desire?

- It is more important than anything that Syria remains a whole. The form of government, which we believe will be much debated, depends on the will of the Syrian people and the constitutional discussions.

* If there is a negotiation on the fate of the Autonomous Administration regions, what are the conditions of the SDF?

- We do not want to call these conditions, but there are things that reality dictates and that need to be taken into account. The priority is to stop military operations in all Syrian territory, especially the attacks of Turkey and its allies against the SDF, so that we, as Syrians, can discuss the future of our country among ourselves without foreign intervention or tutelage. The Autonomous Administration regions are Syrian regions and their representatives must have a role and a say and take part in the construction of the future.

As for the country's resources, they belong to all Syrians. We are committed to a future where resources are distributed fairly and equally by the state for the benefit of all Syrians, taking into account the situation of the regions marginalized by the Bashar al-Assad regime, and where stability and prosperity are ensured for all.

* The leader of the new administration in Damascus, Ahmed al-Shara, called on all Syrian groups to disarm, and the vast majority accepted this. What is the SDF's position on this?

- The future Syria must have a single national army that defends the country and the Syrian citizens. Direct talks are needed to achieve this and to reach a formula on how to implement this issue. The SDF will be integrated into this national army with its weapons, experience and strength.

* Kurds' fears about the city of Ayn al-Arab (Kobani) are increasing. What will happen to the city? What is the SDF's plan for a possible attack on the city?

- The threat of an attack by Turkish-backed groups on Kobani is still very high. We are working with our partners in the US-led International Coalition to defuse the situation there. That's why we proposed a demilitarized zone to allay Turkey's alleged fears. But Turkey has not yet responded to that mediation and the Turkish military buildup continues. In fact, an attack on Kobani would be a disaster and a major threat to the stability of the region, which we do not want.

* Are there any direct or indirect contacts or negotiations with Ankara regarding the status of the regions of Syria adjacent to the Turkish border?

- Contacts with Turkey are indirect, as they are conducted through our partners in the International Coalition led by the United States. We want direct negotiations to address Turkey's concerns. But so far, Turkey has not shown that it is ready for such negotiations, despite our readiness.

* Regional and international powers are constantly demanding that you leave the PKK. How do you deal with these demands that keep countries and international parties busy?

- We have said before that the SDF has no organizational ties with the PKK. Some of its members joined us in our fight against ISIS and fought alongside us. But they will be removed as soon as military operations stop and a suitable mechanism is found to do so. In Northern and Eastern Syria, the decision has always been and will remain in the hands of the people. These fears have no justification.

* There are Kurdish concerns about the lack of a united political front in the Autonomous Administration regions. How do you relate to other Kurdish forces in your regions?

- The Autonomous Administration regions do not only include the Kurds. It is preferable to have an agreed vision among all the components living in these regions, including the Kurds, whose views we try to unite so that they can represent themselves correctly.

* Will the SDF allow Syrian Peshmerga to return to Syria from the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) area?

- We are talking about the establishment of the Syrian national army, the disarmament of the groups and their integration into this army. If the Roj Peshmerga return to their homeland from abroad, this is a natural step to contribute to the construction of their homeland.

* How do you assess the danger posed by ISIS in Syrian territory?

- The fight against ISIS is a priority for the Syrian people and the region. The SDF is ready to work with the new government in Damascus in operations against ISIS and share the responsibilities of counter-terrorism.

We are determined to ensure the security of our neighbors, because Syria will not pose a threat to their security and stability. We are ready to work with the central government to develop measures to ensure that no non-Syrian actor poses a threat to the security of Syria or its neighbors. We are ready in principle to smoothly transfer border control responsibilities to the authorities in Damascus, under a formula to be agreed upon.

* Is Mazlum Abdi planning to visit Sham?

- Of course. Damascus is our capital and we will visit when conditions are suitable.
