During the war,the "rebels" had killed his son. I remember during the funeral representatives of Christian denominations were there as well,apart from Muslims.

In 2016, it was reported by Amnesty International that Hassoun was one of three men who had been deputised by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad with the power to sign execution warrants for prisoners at Sednaya Prison.

Its Notable that Al Rifai is an Ashari Shafi that was appoint Grand Mufti of Syria.

Majority of Syria is Sunni Sufi, not salafi. If free and fair elections are held the salafis will loose all power, most likely Muslim Brotherhood will come to power, the MB is political so they will side with those who vote for them. The salafis will try to control the most powerful positions so they can slowly gain power and followers over the next few decades.

I am surprised he elected Al Rifai as grand mufti. Majority of Syrians are Sunni Sufis like Turkey, Ahmed Sharaa the President and HTS are wobbly though.
