Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa:Today we stand to announce the beginning of a new story; the story of a homeland that has reclaimed its will and a people that has regained its freedom...And from here we begin the tale of the new Syria.
So apparently China is trying to resume the old 'strategic partnership' with Syria which is quite interesting as China was a strong backer of Assad. But in geopolitics nothing is personal and winners set the rules.
China has been actively engaging with Syria's new transitional government, marked by a significant meeting in Beijing in November 2025 .
The Chinese government has outlined a framework for this relationship, focusing on the following key principles and goals:
Political Support & Principle: Officially, China respects the "independent choices" of the Syrian people . It advocates for a "Syrian-led and Syrian-owned" political process, supporting an inclusive dialogue to resolve the conflict and achieve national reconstruction .
Diplomatic Engagement: This engagement was signaled by the visit of Syria's Foreign Minister to Beijing, with China expressing a willingness to help bring bilateral relations "back on track" and to play a constructive role in Syria's stability .
Terrorism Concerns: A key part of China's dialogue with the new Syrian government has been the issue of terrorism. China has called on the transitional government to combat all UN-designated terrorist groups, specifically naming the "Eastern Turkistan Islamic Movement" (ETIM), which it views as a threat to its own security .
Development & Reconstruction: China has shown interest in participating in Syria's economic rebuilding, including cooperation within the Belt and Road Initiative framework . This appears to be a central part of China's vision for engagement.
This high-level engagement follows the establishment of a "strategic partnership" with the previous Syrian government in 2023 , indicating a continued, pragmatic effort to maintain influence during the political transition.
