I know the area very well. Former wife was a San Diego girl.

I had considered attending UCSD at one point. Friends of my uncle taught there. Nice school.

Jeeps are awesome.

I had a convertible Wrangler -- a city boy toy rather than a hardcore hiking vehicle -- but still loads of fun. Drove it cross country lots of times, got stuck in the sand on a Florida beach, did unintentional ice skating on a Minnesota highway (LOL), and many other good memories :)

I do most of my hiking on foot trails and have done more in Australia than in the US. Did a 10 day camping/hiking trip in the Australian outback where we slept in swags (oversized, rugged sleeping bags that can be used instead of setting up a tent) and only stopped for shower/groceries in remote places with population less than 6.

For me, the best part of hiking/camping is to see the night sky in all its brilliance from horizon to horizon and overhead. Did that in the US a few times and plenty more in Australia.
 
All my travels with DHL not once did I make it to MSP. Having grown up on the south shore of Lake Erie, I know that feeling of "unintentional ice skating".

Here in Central Arizona, we have lots of great hiking. In 20 minutes we can be on top of Mingus Mountain and hike for miles.

The nice thing about living up here compared to our PHX metro house is just as you described; no street lights. Can sit out and star gaze for hours.

No road trips as such

Also could put $10k into a bulletproof gas “donkey” like a gx470 or 4 runner
And then get a smaller electric as daily driver
 
7 seater? Big family or a lot of friends?

Having rented both numerous times, I love the 4Runner as well as the Rav4 hybrid. Really like that hybrid. That was my vehicle of choice during the trips to DEN.
