TEJAS MK-2 First Flight Slips to Mid-2027

Aug 29, 2026

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited has confirmed that the first TEJAS MK-2 prototype is expected to make its maiden flight between March and July 2027, slipping once again from earlier schedules that had originally targeted first flight in 2023 before being pushed to 2025 and then 2026.

HAL Chairman and Managing Director Ravi Kumar confirmed the mid-2027 window at the 2026 Farnborough International Air Show, saying structural integration on the first prototype was proceeding according to plan. HAL has mapped out a methodical four-prototype development roadmap that stretches well into the next decade.

The first prototype will fly in 2027, the second will follow in late 2027 or early 2028, and the third and fourth prototypes are scheduled for 2029 and 2030 respectively. The first two aircraft will focus on flight and systems testing, while weapons trials will not begin until the third prototype joins the fleet around mid-2030.

Full production clearance is not expected until approximately 2031.
