1704182736058.png

According to police, the victims were running barber shops in the local bazaar, adding that they were abducted a day earlier and their bodies had been recovered on Tuesday from a nearby area.

Meanwhile, police have launched an investigation into the incident and started search for the arrest of culprits.

The latest incident from North Waziristan came after five labourers had been killed and a watchman was injured by unidentified gunmen while they were sleeping in Wana.

According to the locals of the area, the victims were constructing a police station. At night when they were asleep in their tent, unidentified gunmen shot them dead and fled.

Among the dead, three labourers belonged to the Burki tribe of Shikai and two to the Wazir tribe of Suparkai. The bodies were shifted to the hospital for post-mortem. On the other hand, South Waziristan Police Department is investigating the killings.

2 terrorists, including ‘high-value target’, killed in Tank operation: ISPR

Iftikhar Shirazi
January 5, 2024

Two terrorists, including a “high-value target”, were killed in an intelligence-based operation (IBO) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Tank district, the military’s media affairs wing said on Friday.

In a statement, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said security forces conducted an operation late last night on the “reported presence of terrorists”.

“After an intense fire exchange, two terrorists, including HVT Gul Yousaf Toor, were sent to hell,” it said.

The ISPR stated that Toor had “remained actively involved in numerous terrorist activities against security forces, including high-profile terrorist attacks in Tank and Dera Ismail Khan districts as well as extortion and target killing of innocent civilians”.

“He was highly wanted by the law enforcement agencies and [the] government had fixed head money of Rs2.5 million on him,” the ISPR added.

The military said residents of the area appreciated the security forces’ efforts in “maintaining peace and stability in the area”.

“Security forces of Pakistan, in step with the nation, remain determined to eliminate the menace of terrorism from the country,” the statement concluded.

Pakistan has witnessed an uptick in terror activities in the past year, especially in KP and Balochistan after the banned militant Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan had ended its ceasefire with the government in November 2022.
In the deadliest attack on security forces in the outgoing year, at least 23 Pakistan Army soldiers were martyred and more than 30 troops wounded on Dec 12 after militants belonging to the Tehreek-i-Jihad Pakistan stormed a compound used by the military in Dera Ismail Khan’s Daraban area.

According to an annual security report issued by the Centre for Research and Security Studies (CRSS), Pakistan witnessed 1,524 violence-related fatalities and 1,463 injuries from 789 terror attacks and counter-terror operations in 2023 — marking a record six-year high.
KP and Balochistan provinces were the primary centres of violence, accounting for over 90 per cent of all fatalities and 84pc of attacks, including incidents of terrorism and security forces operations.

Lakki police, elders vow joint efforts to root out militancy

LAKKI MARWAT: Local elders and the police reaffirmed on Friday their resolve to launch joint efforts to defeat the militants and bring normalcy to the Lakki Marwat district.

The resolve was shown at an open kutchery convened by district police officer Tariq Habib at the Serai Gambila police station. The session turned into a dialogue on how to counter militancy though it was arranged to hear people’s complaints against the police.

DSP Ghaznikhel circle Umar Daraz and other police officials were also in attendance.

On the occasion, elders presented valuable suggestions urging the district police chief to improve liaison between police officials and local elders.

They said that a people-friendly police initiative could prove helpful in winning the hearts and minds of people.

They demanded action against street criminals and drug barons, asking the provincial government to equip the district police with modern gadgets, weapons and other facilities.

The elders said that they would stand by the police force in eliminating militancy and restoring peace in the area.

They said that local residents would not tolerate militant attacks on police installations in the region and that people would assist the police in foiling such cowardly attacks and take the outlaws to task.

DPO Tariq Habib asked the elders to support police in efforts to maintain lasting peace in the area.”Without the help of local residents police cannot control crimes,” he maintained, asking people to realise their responsibility and play a role to pinpoint criminal gangs, narcotics sellers and anti-law and anti-peace elements so that police could take effective action against them.

He thanked the people and elders for their assistance with police to foil a militant attack on Serai Gambila police station last week, saying that the joint efforts by police and people would help root out the menace from the region.

Cop martyred in North Waziristan

MIRANSHAH/BAJAUR:
Yet another policeman was gunned down in the troubled North Waziristan tribal district of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) on Wednesday.

In a separate incident, a candidate of Jamiat Uelema-e-Islam Fazl (JUI-F) came under a roadside bomb attack in Bajaur, causing widespread panic among the local residents.

Police told The Express Tribune that unidentified miscreants opened fire on Constable Jan Alam outside a bank in Mir Ali tehsil of North Waziristan.

He said that the unfortunate constable was there to withdraw his salary and was targeted on his way back home. His body was rushed to the District Headquarters Hospital Mir Ali where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.

“He was the resident of Harmaz village and the attackers once again managed to escape unchallenged after committing the crime,” said the official of the local police station, adding a large contingent of police reached there and launched a door-to-door search operation but there was no trace of the attackers.

Police registered an FIR and opened investigation in the case.

Police said that it was without any doubt a case of terrorism as the cop had no personal feud with anyone.

It may be recalled that just a day ago, six non-local young barbers were slaughtered in an incident of sinister violence that seeks to capitalise on ethnic faultlines in North Waziristan where four terrorists, including a would-be suicide bomber, were also eliminated in an intelligence based operation (IBO) on Tuesday.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the sickening slaughter in the Mir Ali tehsil of North Waziristan, but the banned umbrella of terrorist outfits, Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, maintains a presence in the region.

The bodies of the six men were discovered in the fields of Moski village, located in Mir Ali. Preliminary investigation suggests that the victims, all of whom hailed from Punjab, were shot dead execution style.

The victims, all below 30 years of age, included two youths less than 18 years’ old, hence without national identity cards (NICs). All of them were barbers, having recently migrated to North Waziristan to pursue their trade. Sources reveal that the victims owned barber shops in Mir Ali Bazaar.

According to sources, the barbers were reported to have been kidnapped before meeting their tragic end. They were abducted under the cloak of darkness and subsequently murdered by unidentified assailants. It was not until morning that the bodies were spotted by locals in the fields, who immediately alerted the law enforcers. The bodies were shifted to Mir Ali Hospital for medico-legal formalities.

Meanwhile, four terrorists were killed in an intelligence based operation (IBO) in North Waziristan. As per a statement of the military’s media wing, intense fire exchange took place between troops and the terrorists during the conduct of operation.

On the other hand, JUI-F candidate for PK-19 Mamond, Qari Kherullah escaped unhurt in a roadside bomb blast in Lowy Mamond area of Bajaur.

Four people were killed and three others were wounded in firing on a passenger coach and a vehicle near Sadda Bazaar in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Kurram district on Sunday, police said.

District Police Officer (DPO) Muhammad Imran told Dawn.com that the vehicles were targeted by gunmen with automated weapons.

He said two security personnel were also among the deceased. Efforts were under way to find and arrest the culprits, the DPO added.

Dr Qaiser Abbas, the deputy medical superintendent of Parachinar district headquarters hospital, also confirmed the death toll to Dawn.com. He added that the wounded were currently receiving treatment at the hospital.

Local tribes of Turi Bangash have called for an emergency jirga (meeting) to decide on a plan of action about the attacks.

Last month, nine people were killed and 25 injured in a “terrorist” attack on a passenger bus in Gilgit-Baltistan’s Chilas.
