Anti-polio worker shot dead in Bajaur

Police say unidentified attackers successfully fled on motorcycle after the incident

AFP
January 19, 2024

An anti-polio worker was shot dead in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa’s (K-P) Bajaur district on Friday, police said, accusing terrorists who frequently target vaccination teams of being behind the attack.

Pakistan and Afghanistan are the only countries where polio, a debilitating virus which can cause lifelong disability, remains endemic.

Pockets of the mountainous border regions remain resistant to inoculation, with terrorists such as the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) involved in staging attacks on vaccine teams.

Police said that an anti-polio worker on routine duty in Bajaur was shot in the head by "unidentified persons". "The attackers successfully fled on a motorcycle," senior police officer Kashif Zulfiqar told AFP, adding the coordinator was evacuated by helicopter to Peshawar but died in hospital.

He called the attack "an act of militancy" and said police are "conducting further investigations". Another man was also shot in the leg and shoulder, and was being treated in a local hospital.

Last week a roadside bomb in Bajaur killed seven officers deployed to protect polio vaccination workers, police said.

Opposition to inoculation grew after the US Central Intelligence Agency organised a fake vaccination drive to help track down Al-Qaeda's former leader Osama bin Laden.

The country is grappling with deteriorating security as it prepares to go to the polls in three weeks' time.

Last year saw casualties hit a six-year high, with more than 1,500 civilians, security forces and militants killed, according to the Islamabad-based Centre for Research and Security Studies.

Pakistan has accused Afghanistan's Taliban government of sheltering anti-Islamabad militants, a charge Kabul denies.

Five more bodies found in North Waziristan

NORTH WAZIRISTAN / LAKKI MARWAT: Nearly three weeks after the killing of six barbers belonging to Dera Ghazi Khan in North Waziristan, five more people, including at least three non-residents, were found dead in the same Mir Ali tehsil of the district on Saturday.

Police said four of the deceased were found in the Harmoz area of Mir Ali tehsil and another was spotted in the Mir Ali bazaar. They said only three of them were later identified as driver Nasibullah and cleaner Attaur Rehman, both residents of Lakki Marwat district, and Arif Khan, a resident of Karak district.

All the five bodies were shifted to hospital for autopsy, the officials said.

The police also found two vehicles parked at the vegetable market that they believed belonged to Nasibullah and Attaur Rehman. Their murder triggered protests in their hometown Lakki Marwat, where locals took to the streets after their bodies were brought there from North Waziristan.

The locals staged a protest demonstration on the busy Indus Highway. One of the protesters told Dawn that both deceased hailed from the Manjiwala area of Lakki Marwat district and they had just stopped in the Mir Ali bazaar while transporting vegetables to Tall in a pick-up truck.

He said the families of the deceased as well as other villagers got infuriated when their bodies were brought to the village from North Waziristan district. They took the bodies to Manjiwala Chowk and blocked traffic on the Peshawar-Karachi Highway. The highway closure caused queuing up of vehicles on both sides, besides troubling transporters and commuters.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the killings.

Earlier on January 2, six barbers hailing from Punjab’s Dera Ghazi Khan district were abducted before being killed in the Mosaki village of Mir Ali tehsil. According to police, the barbers had been living and running shops in Mir Ali bazaar for past many years.

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) — Militants armed with rockets, guns and grenades attacked a police station in a former stronghold of the Pakistani Taliban in the country’s northwest before dawn on Monday, killing 10 officers before fleeing, authorities said.
Six officers were also wounded in this year’s deadliest attack in Dera Ismail Khan, a district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, which borders Afghanistan. No group immediately claimed responsibility. Senior police officer Anees-ul-Hassan said security forces were working to find and arrest the attackers.
The latest violence came two months after a suicide bomber detonated an explosive-laden vehicle outside a police station in the same district in December, killing at least 23 troops and wounding another 32.

That attack was claimed by a newly formed militant group — Tehreek-e-Jihad Pakistan, which is believed to be an offshoot of the Pakistani Taliban. Following the Dec. 5 attack in Dera Ismail Khan, troops killed 27 insurgents in multiple operations, according to the military and local police officials.

It also came about a week after insurgents attacked security forces in southwestern Baluchistan province, killing six people, including four security forces. The military also killed 24 insurgents after coming under attack in Mach, a district in Baluchistan, last week.
The outlawed Baluchistan Liberation Army claimed responsibility for the coordinated attacks.
Pakistan has witnessed a surge in militant attacks in recent months.

Most of such attacks have happened in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where militants in January 2023 killed at least 101 people, mostly police officers, when a suicide bomber disguised as a policeman attacked a mosque in the northwestern city of Peshawar.
Dera Ismail Khan is located near South Waziristan, a former militant sanctuary.
Pakistan’s army carried out multiple operations there after a 2014 attack on an army-run school that killed more than 150 people, mostly children.
