why did he charge to the crowd? There were police already. Self-defence is valid when the other party is attacking while you are backing. It is not that you smash into a crowd, get beaten and draw your weapon.

Self-defence is defending against any kind of attack. The attack with the rod was life threatening. Drawing your firearm to disperse the mob, no matter why and what escalated it, is a classic example of effective use of minimal force, without causing any casualty.

The officer should not be court-martialed, in fact he should be awarded for keeping his cool against a charging crowd of Afghans and PTM members.
