Experts urge protection of mangroves

The Express Tribune

Environmentalists and experts are stressing the urgent need to protect and preserve mangrove forests, highlighting their critical role in providing economic, social, and ecological services that benefit local communities and society at large.

They said that mangroves, which serve as the most effective nurseries for the breeding of various fish, crab, and shrimp species, are unparalleled in their ability to sequester carboncapturing up to four times more carbon compared to other coastal plants found in regions across Pakistan, including Karachi, Keti Bandar, Thatta, Sujawal, and parts of Balochistan.

Mangroves, often described as nature's walls of defence, offer invaluable protection against natural disasters such as storms, floods, and tsunamis. In addition to their role in safeguarding air quality and supporting marine life, these forests are crucial for the fishing industry, enabling fishermen to catch a diverse array of fish species, thereby sustaining their livelihoods.

One of the most notable mangrove forests, located on Turtle Beach in Karachi, spans 470 hectares (1,161.4 acres) and offers a lush, green, and serene landscape that captivates both local and international visitors.

This forest primarily consists of two out of four mangrove species found in the region: Avicennia marina (Grey Mangrove/White Mangrove) and Rhizophora mucronata (Loot Roop Mangrove/Red Mangrove). These mangroves can reach heights of over 20 feet, with their intricate, pointed roots and drooping green branches creating a mesmerising natural environment.

The importance of these mangrove forests was underscored during a programme held on Turtle Beach late Thursday evening. The event, which featured a Community-Driven Coastal Cleanup initiative, was organised by inDrive in collaboration with WWF-Pakistan as part of the "Tide of Care" campaign.

The campaign, launched on Pakistan's 77th Independence Day, aimed not only to address environmental degradation through beach cleanups but also to reflect a broader mission of supporting and uplifting local communities. The drive saw participation from scores of volunteers from educational institutions and various organisations.

Tree Plantation begins at New Gwadar International Airport

GWADAR - A tree plantation drive has kicked off at New Gwadar International Airport (NGIA) under the “Green Coverage Initiative” as part of fulfilling the commitment to BRI’s global greener practices.

In the first phase, which started on September 3rd, more than 3 kilometers of incoming and outgoing roads at NGIA are being brought under tree coverage.

During the second phase, trees will be planted on designated patches of the airport to boost the green ecosystem across 4,300 acres of NGIA.

A GDA official told Gwadar Pro that most plants have been sourced from the Plant Tissue Culture Lab and Greenhouse, which is an integral part of the Belt and Road Engineering Research Center for Tropical Arid Non-Wood Forest. This center is built and operated in cooperation with Central South University of Forestry and Technology, China, COPHC, and Yulin Holding Co., Ltd. within the premises of the Gwadar Port South Free Zone area.

He said that Gwadar has a hot desert climate, characterized by little precipitation and high variation between summer and winter temperatures.

Serious soil salinization has led to a low survival rate of plants, he added. “Keeping in view the local ecological challenges, we are planting tropical economic tree species that can adapt to high temperature, salt and alkali, wind and sand, and draught,” he added.

Cut wood from trees declared exempted from sales tax

LAHORE: In a significant setback to the sales tax department, a recent tribunal ruling has declared that cut wood from trees, including poplar and eucalyptus, remains agriculture produce and is exempt from sales tax.

The department’s attempt to impose sales tax on farmers selling cut wood to wood processing companies has been thwarted, leaving farmers relieved and the department reeling.

The sales tax department had been attempting to recover sales tax from farmers under Section 11(2) of the Sales Tax Act, 1990.

The case involved a chipboard manufacturer who purchased cut wood from farmers and middlemen. However, the tribunal held that cutting wood into pieces does not constitute a manufacturing process, and the wood remains agriculture produce until further processed into chipboard or laminated wood.

The ruling stated that Entry No. 10 of Table-II of the Sixth Schedule to the Sales Tax Act, 1990, exempts agriculture produce from sales tax.

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court on Wednesday directed the authorities concerned to relocate trees, instead of trimming and cutting them, for the construction of an electric bus depot in Green Town.

Justice Shahid Karim was hearing multiple petitions related to smog and other environmental issues.

Advocate General of Punjab (AGP) Khalid Ishaq also appeared before the court with updated reports on the government actions to reduce smog, including planting of new trees and the installation of pollution monitoring equipment.

The judge commended the government’s efforts to address the smog issue, suggesting the formulation of a policy to limit the market hours and wedding ceremonies’ timings.

He remarked that joint efforts by the government and the court resulted in pleasant weather, with bright sunshine visible nowadays.
