Turkey Syria - News & Updates

It's only logical to gain experience and have better strategy and tactics.

The Syrian Army has been...from at least 2013-2014 as far as I can remember, very poorly equipped. Except for a few units, the majority of the army had outdated gear.

If you allow me to share what I remember from all the videos and photos from the war back then. Because since the start of the war I used to follow the news about battles and stuff all the time,I used to check sites,FB groups,I still have a big collection of photos from the war and lots of videos. Could have had more, but after a point I was tired of it.

Anyway, the majority of the SAA had no combat vests, many had old helmets,no modern rifles,no nightvision equipment.

Only a few units or individuals had full body armor, nightvision goggles or AKs with scopes on.

The other problem, which I believe has been overlooked in this conflict,is that the SAA lacked modern armored vehicles and MRAPs.

How many times have you seen or read about Syrian soldiers going to war in urban warfare or long convoys with just technicals? They had to clear out entire cities with just BMPs and tanks. Imagine how many Syrian soldiers and militia would have survived if they had MRAPs and armored cars. I've seen videos from Iraq where soldiers and journalists are saved by the armored glass or the fact that they're inside a MRAP or an up-armored Humvee. Sniper shots on the humvees and other armor.

But the lack of APCs in the Syrian army cost them so many lives.

The other thing was that after the Russians got involved in the war in 2014,they didn't provide the Syrian Army with enough modern equipment. Back then I thought that as an ally and protector, the Russians would give the SAA tens of thousands of new helmets, body armor, new uniforms etc. They didn't even provide them with hundreds of MRAPs. The Americans give their allies or proxies armored vehicles, they give them personal gear and make sure they have a better fighting chance.

The Russians gave them a few T-90s,a few Tigr,a few select officers and units did get special equipment...they did get a handful of BTR-80s and BTR-80As,some T-62s and that's it. I was so disappointed. I thought the Russians would try to impress the West and show them that they have the equipment and money to help their allies.
I agree with your observations. In general, the Assad regime, Russians and Iranians appear to be - for the lack of a better word - exhausted after years of fighting. In addition, the Ukrainian War and the Israeli-Iranian confrontations are a massive burden on Moscow and Tehran.

Right now they have difficulties allocating resources to combat the rebels while the Syrian opposition has the backing of Turkey. You can clearly see how well equipped they are. This time they display strategic depth and agility.

Also, almost every unit put aside its differences before the op started. For the first time in a long period the opposition front is united.

If I may say,the Iranians had suffered so many losses in Syria by Israeli bombings and attrition with enemy groups. Their proxy militias and volunteers have had so many losses in Syria. I agree 100% the Russians are exhausted and their role there now is more limited. Unless they decide to somehow shift the front to the Middle-East for some reason. But they still lack the trained soldiers and upgraded weapons for that. Unless they wanna just keep sending BMPs and BMDs which for some reason they keep making(I guess in lack of resources, money and innovation).

Ah,you mentioned it,yes. Agreed 100%

Maybe they see that Russia is now pre-occupied they have a chance at reviving the war,go on the offensive after years. Maybe a bit of encouragement from Erdogan, maybe a bit of Iran not doing much, the interesting thing is to see how Trump will treat the Kurds. If it's like the last time, they will just run to Assad.

When Americans leave they run to the Syrian government "Essad Essad halp us",when Americans come back "Oh Amrika I love u,we want our independence"

The regime uses barrel bombs which I doubt is effective at all. The rebels move fast and accurately on the ground. These tactics work against civilians, not highly trained fighters.

I don't understand why since so many years Syrian rebels, western powers have failed to topple Bashar AL Assad government..... agreed Syria had a capable military but since 2013 they are isolated and taking hit from all the directions still there is no sign of that Assad leaving the power ..... what is the secret behind this?
