The Americans turned a blind eye until the Soviets were defeated, then they couldn't care less. Reagan even invited 'mujaheddin' leaders to the White House and congress labelled as 'freedom fighters', the same 'freedom fighters' who are running amok in Afghanistan and Pakistan now.

Yes but even then, the west was extremely busy ensuring Pakistan never got the bomb. The nuclear suppliers group was created in 1974 to make sure Pakistan’s Procurment path was closed, restrictions on enrichment and dual use tech, enhanced western intelligence on suspected proliferation networks etc etc. All of these including the missile tech control regime were specifically created to ensure Pakistan’s nuclear program collapsed. The economic sanctions were the last desperate tool.

So even during the Cold War, it’s incorrect to say the west looked the other way.

Why is it so difficult for people to accept that Pakistan played her cards like a high stakes poker player ? Pakistani bomb was like immaculate conception.
