There were never "Latin" people in the US, unless you counted those catholic bishops, the word you are looking for is L.A.T.I.N.O.S. Specifically Los Latinos
That's South American in SPANISH.
And there are like a mil and a half Brazilian American in the US (Compare to 61 mil Hispanic), so when you talk about South American in the US, you basically are talking about Hispanic, not Latinos

If that's your definition of Latin, then English can be called "Latin" too because English is actually closer to the Latin root than Spanish, in fact, Old English was written in Latin Alphabet, since England was conquered by the Roman Empire in 87 AD (Which uses Latin as their language)

On the other hand, as I said before, when you talk about South American in general, you basically were talking about Hispanic, not Latinos. Since there are 61 million Spanish speaking Hispanic and 1.75 million Portuguese speaking Brazilian. The Brazilian population in the US in the South American group is neglectable
