America was NEVER a true democracy; it is a Representation Republic. We don't vote the President by personal ballot (or popular vote), we use an electoral college system. The USA is not a proper democracy. I am not sure what phrase can be used to describe the setup in the USA, but democracy is not one of them. For any true democracy, if the leader suffers such a large blow out in an election for his party, the party would be demanding the immediate resignation of the leader. The UK is case in point, where there is accountability of the leader. There is none in the USA.
The very concept that a leader can become a lame duck president as a result of a so called democratic election, but still allowed to continue as a leader is the antithesis of a true democratic setup.
The American constitution has failed to create and ensure a true democratic setup.
The reason why this is the case is a very complicated issue, I can write a paper just for this, but long story short, America just came from being a colony and gaining independence, they don't trust executive power, which originally a republic in 1700s would have seen the Congress (or Parliament in Europe) choosing the President and people vote for the congress. On the other hand, we can't trust our citizens enough for them to pick the president directly, mostly because back then, most American are farmer and they would almost always choose a grassroot guy instead of a professional like a doctor or lawyer or whatever. Which the electoral college system was born, as a compromise
And that set the stage for our election system, and since amending the constitution is exceedingly hard to do, which mean this 1700s system still remain and largely it had been outdated for almost 200 years.
