Household net worth​

The net worth of households and nonprofit organizations – the difference between the value of total assets and liabilities (figure 1) – increased by $12.8 trillion to $195.9 trillion in the second quarter.1The ratio of net worth to disposable personal income (DPI), a measure of households’ potential to finance consumption out of their wealth, reached a record high of 8.28 in the second quarter (figure 2), surpassing the previous peak recorded in 2022:Q1.

in other words, there were other 35 sub economic inside the USA which were off the books!

This is a measure of US household and nonprofit organizations net worth and government debt doesn’t factor in here.

Americans are absurdly wealthy and our disposable incomes allow us to drive high economic output.

is it me or does article go something like the rich get richer and no mention of the poor or middle class they just lump everyone together and say look more money

Those stats are correct on household wealth and debt. And no doubt the total financial GDP power of US is immense. But why is it a problem for the bond markets and why do so many Americans feel the pain. Step 1, divide the net wealth over the population.
US falls to spot #4 ..

Step 2, the debt on the US govt is immense and ultimately owed by the households. Adjusting the debt and govt sovereign wealth , US nationals are insolvent. In good times this broader measure doesnt matter as people believe that US govt will pay its debt back because it can tax her nationals. However, when the bond markets start questioning the credibility that trust flips to a concern in a dramatic and violent manner. US had a default in 1971 (see below) , the financial implications were the difficult 1970s of stagflation.

Fortunately for the US, subsequent Presidents including Reagan and Volker as the Fed Chair stabilised the problems. American people were brilliant and bounced back hard and entered great 1980s , 90s ... 2000s brought the Iraq and Afghan wars + GFC that made US take the first hit followed on by Trump's nail in the coffin.

Good news is that American people are hard working and smart and can turn this around but will be painful and will need some good leaders to undo the damage.
