Trump’s Iran Deal Still Has to Get Past the Revolutionary Guard​


Iran’s security and military circles centered on the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps had yet to sign off on President Trump’s preliminary deal to wind down the war, mediators said Friday, a potentially significant stumbling block amid rising hopes of a breakthrough to end the three-and-a-half-month conflict.

The negotiations are aimed at securing a minimal memorandum of understanding that would end the fighting and open the Strait of Hormuz while setting the stage for later talks on thornier issues. The mediators, who have been helping broker talks since a shaky ceasefire was implemented in April, said there has been progress closing the gaps around opening the strait and addressing nuclear issues, and that Iran’s top diplomats were on board.

But they said the draft was still being reviewed by Iran’s hard-line security officials, a group more concerned with re-establishing deterrence and denying the U.S. and Israel a victory than with ending the war. That shadowy process is poorly understood and has undermined progress in the past, they said. Different groups of mediators are dealing with the diplomatic channel and the Revolutionary Guard channel.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announces that the final text of the peace agreement between the United States and Iran has been reached, confirming that Islamabad is working closely with both parties to the conflict to complete the next steps.

Sharif added in a post on the X platform that peace is now closer than ever, despite what he described as ongoing disinformation campaigns aimed at obstructing the agreement.
