Pakistan, North Korea's mutually beneficial ties have long been a source of suspicion for West: Dawn
In the 1990s, Pakistan, North Korea, Iran and Libya all faced varying degrees of US pressure and sanctions, creating incentives for closer relationships outside the Western system.
After Pakistan's nuclear tests in May 1998, there was reportedly a belief among some Pakistani nuclear figures that other Muslim countries should also develop nuclear capabilities.
The logic behind this thinking was that, if there were three, they could collectively withstand Western pressure.
Here's the brief timeline that follows:
February 2000: Pakistan's military leadership reportedly began receiving information/suspicions about A.Q. Khan's proliferation activities.
January 2002: The United States declared Iran, Iraq and North Korea as the Axis of Evil.
October 2003: The seizure by German/Italian authorities of centrifuge components bound for Libya on the BBC China helped expose the international Khan proliferation network.
Iran backstabs Pakistan by handing over Pakistani centrifuge designs to the US. The US returns these designs to Pakistan as proof of nuclear proliferation.
December 2003: Libya formally renounces nuclear weapons program.
January 2004: The United States begins airlifting 55,000 pounds of documents and nuclear related material. This
helps. US investigators uncover the extent of the Khan network.
February 2004: Pakistan's Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan publicly admitted responsibility for nuclear proliferation to Iran, Libya and North Korea.
Pakistan's view on Libya and Iran changes dramatically, that these two nations are so weak and pathetic that they could not handle US pressure and decided to reveal all Pakistani officials and unofficial assistance to the US.
