US Perspective on the Iran - Israel / US War

Well here we go... The messaging is now trickling all across Europe...

At times like this I am glad I am a prepper... People used to laugh at me for making grab bags and caches... Guess who's laughing now sucka?

and what really happens after the 72 hours? another 72 hours :p
Ah I am so glad you asked... So Back in May 2025 during Pakistan India crisis I made a series of posts helping people get ready incase the conflict expanded part of these posts was on how to make a "bug out bag or a grab bag"
1793136429491.png

Now you will see in my post too I mentioned 72 hours as the minimum, so why do people recommend 72 hours are the magic number for survival you ask? Without making it a boring lecture lets talk emergency management for a second:

1793137043182.png

Incidents occur everyday and majority of them never make headlines, this is because they are able to be managed at a local level within the capacity of the local emergency services such as a car crash or a house fire...

Now when a situation has the ability to generate demand that would overwhelm the local capacity it is considered a Disaster.

For instance, an Earthquake happens, the earthquake causes buildings to collapse, power and gas lines to be damaged, phone lines break down, roads may become damaged, water and sanitation services may be impacted (this is the initial impact).

People panic and start calling emergency service numbers, and calling friends and family members to get information, this quickly clogs the telephone system and increasing demand on emergency services means that there simply aren't enough ambulances and fire engines to attend every call.

Furthermore the sudden peak in telephone traffic may clog the telecommunication networks entirely resulting in those desperately needing emergency services being unable to contact them.

People rushing on the roads cause traffic jams and overwhelm the traffic management system, this create a strain on the local police service. Hospitals may become inundated with wounded and injured, and may need to prioritize the most seriously wounded first, this is known as medical triage.

Well wishing people may rush to the scene to spectate or to volunteer, this create a crowd control situation, further straining the limited resources that the local police service may have.

Now whilst the people living in the city are concerned about their own loved ones in the city, news comes in that the earthquake has hit multiple cities and remote parts of the country potentially affecting hundreds of thousands of people.

Now there are reports of people coming to collapsed buildings pretending to be family members and looting anything they can find, this now become a law and order situation. (yes this actually happens)

The government of the country put their national crisis/disaster management plan in place, services such as the military/search and rescue etc. are called in. But the military etc aren't immune, chances are their personnel, equipment and buildings have also been affected by the disaster and they need time to organize and mobilize.

During this time as one day passes into the next, people who were enjoying their lives realize they don't have enough food, so they try to go to the shops to buy food...

But guess what? The market owners have decided to A) hoard goods B) Jack up prices or C) there is panic buying and now there is no way to get the basics you need during the initial phase of the disaster whilst the government grapples with the crisis.

In another remote part of the country, the local government decide that the area is simply too hazardous for residents to remind in their houses and decide to evacuate houses and move people into a football stadium which has been designated as an emergency shelter.

But people weren't ready, they weren't prepared, so they bundle what little items they have with them and move into the evacuation center, when they arrive the soon realize that there is inadequate shelter, inadequate water and food and little to no "comfort" items needs for daily life such as hygiene and sanitation.

Now according to people much smarter than me at agencies such as FEMA who studied how nations responded to mass disasters in Japan and Mexico and Turkey discovered that the average "rubber banding" reaction time for aid workers, and relief to reach victims is approximately 48-72 hours.

Hence the 72 hour kit was born, it is not a panacea, it is the bare minimum you should have for you and your family, meaning 1 x72 hour kit for each member of your family, so should you need to evacuate your home due to a disaster or an unexploded bomb or a gas leak or any other crisis, you have the minimum essentials to keep you moderately comfortable whilst the all clear is issued or you can obtain further support.
---

But remember a bag with batteries and water and first aid kits is useless if you don't have a plan on what to do as a family or an individual should the worst happen. This is where your personal emergency plan comes into play... Don't worry old Uncle Rescue ranger has you covered here too:

... being prepared is not an act reserved to certain people, just remember that it wasn't raining when Hazrat Nuh build the arc.
---
Netfilx made a wonderful series called Japan Sinks which highlights the importance of the stains on a modern country facing a large scale disaster as it tracks the story of a young girl and her brother as they struggle to make sense of and survive the aftermath.

If you are serious about being ready - I highly recommend you give this series a watch

Further resources on how to plan and prepare are available here on PDF or you can check your local government website about preparing for emergencies.

Mrs. AZ wonders why I want to start wearing a vest like that. It should be obvious. And, as an old man now, it's mandatory.

It's scary how many people do not realize they have sufficient items at home for a 72-hour bag. Probably even the bag.

I don't know very many people who don't carry a backpack. Even a 24-hour pack, properly kitted, can get you into 48-hours if you must.

You may get a little cold, a little hungry, and perhaps a little miserable, but even basic supplies will go a long way to keep you alive.

There is no real prepper culture in the UK. It is such a benign and passive place to live that now the government has asked people to prepare, it is freaking people out.

I need to start to think about this, and I don’t know of anyone who thinks of this in the UK.

Strange times!

And to think, for some over there it wasn't that long ago they were absolutely thinking about this.

Passiveness has a bad habit of killing you.

Funny thing is, the UK quite literally wrote the book on civil protection during war times back in the day:

There is a wonderful animated movie called "When the wind blows" from 1986 that follows the lives of a British couple trying to survive following a nuclear attack on Mainland UK by the Russians:

Sadly the reason not just the UK but majority of Europe take a nonchalant approach to preparedness is because they have grown fat on the dividend of a post cold war world under the NATO (US) security umbrella.

One glaring thing wrong with this is water. People who don't train regularly in a minimal water environment are going to feel it immediately. Even now, 1 gallon per person per day may not be enough. But, water is heavy.

Since my own recommendation is to stay home, and add more water to your preps. At least 3 gallons per person per day. It's not hard really. Here in my own house, the hot water heater will supply 50 gallons. . I might have enough storage containers here to provide enough water for us and the cat for two full weeks. A trip to a supplier down in the valley, two food-grade drums later, and that is now a month.

You'll be fine, i don't understand the logic of people hoarding guns, MRE's, survival stuff... specially in USA which has a strong Law enforcement agencies from homeland security to FBI, local police, to national guard. If people have so much extra money to waste on survival gear why not put that money to better use? give it to charity or invest on your kids future?

I have invested in my kids and to an extent my grandkids' future.

Just because the US has a rather solid law enforcement foundation, who is to say what might happen should there be a situation resulting in complete societal breakdown? Who is to say that local LEO and NG might opt to protect their families first. A WROL situation is very real. You at least want to give yourself a chance. I don't need to point out global example to you. That would be demeaning.

I live in a rural area. If a societal breakdown should occur, and my family is being threatened, I am not going to rely on the police. In fact, about a year and a half ago, I was having a chat with my cop neighbor in our old neighborhood. She confided to me that in a true SHTF situation, the PD did NOT have the resources to maintain order. I did not doubt her. I knew how big the force was and how many residents there were in the city. Outside of the SWAT team, I am better armed / armored than the average street cop there.

I come from an environment where I'd rather have it, and not need it, than need it, and not have it.

Good, but imagine you can put a lot more towards your kids/grandkids/health/vacation if you don't waste all that money towards guns/ammo and other stuff.

You know since i moved here and I have this question to many Americans who hoard guns, give me 1 realistic scenario where you would need to bunker down and take guard with your guns, societies don't collpase easily in high tech strict societies where every move is either monitored or police/help is minutes away from you dialing 911.
You mention societal breakdown, but what will cause it? or what makes you think that Govt will just be like, yeah aight!!! we are done!!! I don't think govt works like that, I grow up in Pakistan and we hear this every Friday that next Friday will be Pakistan's last, any Pakistani will tell you... but Govt's whether puppet Political parties or dictators but societies don't just collpase.

Again, societies don't collpase like this, not even in poor civil war ridden 3rd world countries, its a slow decline when a lot of people just either leave or stay at home, no one is stupid enough to poke out their gun to open fire at the mob if the so called societal collapse actually happen, in fact i believe that people who does have a lot of guns and believe that one day the society will collapse they often times suffering from severe mental illness end up shooting a shopping mall, school or some random place (not talking about you specifically), or but even if Govt somehow turns evil (according to your standard) no matter how much you arm yourself you will be taken out, and if govt/agencies think you are a threat then trust me and you should know this better that you won't be able to make it your gun safe to shoot back, FBI/SWAT/Police/Govt LEA's are just way to powerful and well armed. I had this same conversation with my ex-father in law who had a massive gun safe, and he was preparing himself for some evil democratic govt who will come for his guns, and XYZ. But truth is that none of if will matter if there is no collapse, America is a very carefully constructed and controlled country, you can have a lot of crazy rightwingers or free militia but FBI and homeland keeps a very keen eye on them, lots of documentaries are made on how FBI infiltrated milita to prevent a mass shooting or mass unrest.

Its not my money so you can spend on whatever you like or even burn it :) but I believe that people who hoard weapons/ammo and MRE's and other stuff in hope that someday they will use it to protect someone or somebody, or get to play some hero like they show in movies, 99.9% of the times people who hoard them die with old age in a hospital and all that stuff either goes to their kids or ended up in pawn shops when widow's can't afford bills.
