There was no clear winner in the first and only VP debate of the 2024 race, illustrating how split the country is:
1. Asked who won Tuesday’s debate, voters were split 50-50 over whether it was JD Vance or Tim Walz, according to a POLITICO/Focaldata snap poll of likely voters conducted just after the two faced off in a studio in New York City.
2. CNN instant poll of debate watchers conducted by SSRS. Following the debate, 51% of viewers said that Vance did the better job, with 49% picking Walz.
In my opinion, Tim Walz missed an opportunity to expose JD Vance and how dangerous he is. While both candidates handled several important issues, such as immigration, reproductive rights, and the January 6th mob attack on the nation's capital, Walz avoided addressing Vance's normalizing of extreme viewpoints under the pretense of moderation. Walz permitted Vance to maintain a façade that may deceive voters on important issues by failing to reveal these disparities.
Good debate techniques necessitate both outlining one's own policies and critically analyzing the arguments made by the opposition.
However, everything was not lost. Here are a few of my favorites:
